Twenty years in gestation, James Cameron’s long-cherished manga adaptation Alita: Battle Angel finally reaches the big screen with help from director Robert Rodriguez and Peter Jackson’s digital effects team.

James Cameron’s manga-based cyborg takes box office crown on its opening day in Chinese cinemas.

The Hollywood CGI blockbuster earned 132 million yuan (US$19.7 million) on its first day in China’s cinemas, compared with The Wandering Earth’s 60 million yuan on the same day

Alita’s character is brought to life using computer-generated imagery, and the most striking features about her aren’t her cybernetic limbs, but the enlarged eyes. Comments have ranged from humorous to outright critical, and several bring up a very important principle of animation: the uncanny valley.

There are several subplots involving cyberpunk bounty hunters, a ruling elite that lives in the sky and the town’s favorite sport — Motorball, a combination meth-fueled roller derby and Death Race.

Proud Mexican-American Rodriguez adds his personal mark from the first frame with the Iron City production design, an agreeably funky steampunk barrio with Spanish-language signs and architectural nods to Latin America.

Another oddly lazy touch is the background chorus of minor characters who look like refugees from ’80s music videos, with their piercings and tattoos, wild Mohawk hair and artfully ripped leather jackets. This kind of by-the-numbers cyberpunk futurism looked pretty tired 20 years ago, and feels utterly redundant today.

But not every review praised the movie. The Hollywood Reporter’s reviewer wasn’t impressed by the movie. “Their chutzpah is admirable, but perhaps, on this occasion, a little misplaced,” read the review. Entertainment Weekly seconded the review and said, “A better version of this movie would’ve kept its mind on the game. Better title: Rollerblade Runner.”
