A First-Hand China Field Guide for Independent Travelers
Ruqin China Travel is an independent China field guide created to help international travelers navigate China with clarity and confidence.
China often feels complex at first — mobile payments, high-speed rail, digital systems, large cities, unfamiliar logistics. The difficulty usually isn’t the destination itself. It’s understanding how the systems work.
This guide exists to make those systems clear.

Experience Behind the Guide
Ruqin China Travel is grounded in over 30 years of experience in China’s inbound travel industry.
Based in Beijing, Ruqin worked directly with international visitors — coordinating routes, transport, accommodations, and daily logistics across major cities. Through that work, one pattern became clear:
Travelers didn’t just need more information.
They needed clear explanations of how things actually function.
That principle continues to shape this guide.
What Defines This Guide
Ruqin China Travel operates as a structured field guide:
- Clear explanations of payment and transport systems
- Step-by-step guidance for first-time visitors
- Practical city guides based on realistic pacing
- Logically sequenced trip-planning frameworks
- Selectively recommended tours where logistics are complex
The focus is clarity over volume, and practicality over promotion.
Content is based on lived experience inside China and updated as systems evolve.
The Approach
Most travel stress comes from not knowing what to expect.
How do you pay for things?
How early should you arrive at a train station?
Which areas are easiest to stay in?
How much time do you realistically need between cities?
When those questions are answered clearly, China stops feeling overwhelming and starts feeling manageable.
Some travelers handle everything independently. Others prefer a tour for destinations where transport or timing is complicated. Both approaches work — when the decisions are informed.
The goal is simple:
Know what to expect.
Plan realistically.
Move through each city with confidence.
Based in Beijing
Living and working in Beijing allows Ruqin Travel to remain grounded in current systems and real-world conditions.
This guide is independently operated and committed to practical, field-based guidance.
Safe travels,
Ruqin

Good morning, I’d like to receive some information about a Great Wall evening trip, starting not before 4 pm on 23th August.
We are two people and our hotel is in the Bund. Can you send me some options and quote, please?
Thank you in advance.
Best regards.
Laura Romano
Good morning, Laura!
Thank you for reaching out to us. We’re thrilled to help you plan an unforgettable evening trip to the Great Wall of China in Beijing! I understand you’re looking for options that start after 4 PM on the 23rd of August, and that you’re currently staying in the Bund area of Shanghai. Below, I’ve outlined two options for you, including transportation, guided tours, and pricing ( to be quoted ):
Practically, starting from your hotel in the Bund in Shanghai is too late. You know the fastest highspeed train from Shanghai to Beijing takes 4 and half hours, the transfer from Beijing South Railway Station to the night tour of Mutianyu Great Wall takes at least one hour. The night tour of Mutianyu Great Wall is closed at 9:30 pm. So we suggest you take the 2 pm highspeed train from Shanghai to Beijing.
Additionally, you’d better stay in Beijing for one night because the last train from Beijing to Shanghai leaves at 9:21 PM. You cannot catch the last train. So you should stay in Beijing for one night, take the next morning ‘s train back to Shanghai.
Based on the considerations above, we design two options ( prices to be quoted ) for you. If you are satisfied with the itineraries, then we quote you the prices.
Option 1: Private Evening Tour with night tour of the Mutianyu Great Wall
Description: Experience a private night tour of the Great Wall at the Mutianyu section, one of the most picturesque and less crowded areas. You’ll have the opportunity to walk along the wall as the sun sets, illuminated Great Wall followed by a Chinese dinner at a traditional Chinese restaurant.
Itinerary:
2:00 PM: Depart from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station in Shanghai and get to Beijing via a high-speed train (first-class tickets).
6:30 PM: Arrive in Beijing and transfer to the Mutianyu Great Wall (private car with an English-speaking guide).
7:30 PM: Access to the Great Wall at Mutianyu, with a private guide.
10:00 PM: Dinner at a local restaurant near the Wall.
11:00 PM: Return to your hotel in Beijing (transfer service )
6:00 AM: starts from your Beijing hotel to Beijing South Railway Station (transfer service )
7:00 AM: Train leaves for Shanghai and arrives in Shanghai at 11; 29 am and transfer to your hotel in the Bund in Shanghai
Price: to be quoted
Option 2: Budget-Friendly Independent Tour
Description: This option allows you to visit the Mutianyu Great Wall at your own pace. We provide train tickets, transfers in Beijing, and a detailed itinerary, but no guide is included.
Itinerary:
2:00 PM: Depart from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station in Shanghai and get to Beijing via a high-speed train (second-class tickets).
6:30 PM: Arrive in Beijing and transfer to the Mutianyu Great Wall (private car with driver)
7:30 PM: Access to the Great Wall at Mutianyu and visit on your own.
10:30 PM: No Dinner and return to your hotel in Beijing
6:00 AM: starts from your Beijing hotel to Beijing South Railway Station (transfer service )
7:00 AM: Train leaves for Shanghai and arrive in Shanghai at 11; 29 am and go to your hotel in the Bund in Shanghai on your own
Price: to be quoted
Important Notes:
Booking Deadline: Please note that due to the time-sensitive nature of this trip, bookings should be confirmed as soon as possible.
Inclusions: All options include round-trip train tickets, transfers, and entrance fees. Dinner and private guide are not included in the budget-friendly option.
Weather Considerations: Evening visits to the Great Wall are subject to weather conditions. In case of heavy rain or other adverse weather, the trip may be rescheduled or canceled with a full refund.
Please let us know which option suits you best, or if you have any specific preferences or questions. We’re here to make sure your Great Wall experience is as magical and memorable as possible!

Hi Daniel
Sorry, didn’t have a chance to reply to u as we left for Jinhae, S Korea b4 heading to China. After exploring Shanghai, Nanjing, Xitang, Wuzhen, we safely arrived in Wuyuan n loving the place.
Without you, this trip would have been challenging for us to plan and navigate ourselves. Truly thankful to your patience, superb attitude and kindness extended to us.
We look forward to exploring more of China in the coming years as long as our legs can carry us. Have a wonderful life ahead!

Hi Lily
What a lovely surprise to get your message – thank you for the kind words!
I’m so happy to hear that you made it to Wuyuan safely and are enjoying the beautiful scenery there. Sounds like you’ve had quite the journey already, from Jinhae to all those amazing spots in China – what a fantastic adventure!
Honestly, it was such a pleasure doing a little bit for planning your trip. Keep exploring as long as those legs are up for it (and I hope that’s for many more years to come!). There’s still so much of China waiting for you, and I’d be more than happy to help anytime you decide to come back.
Wishing you safe travels and loads more unforgettable moments ahead.

I HAVE A QUESTION, IS THERE An english guide inside the communist party museum in Beijing?
Hi MADELEINE Yu,
Thanks for reaching out to Ruqin China Travel!
From what we know, the museum’s English-speaking guides need to be booked in advance. We also recommend using the English audio guide (they offer audio guides in multiple languages). Additionally, you can scan the QR codes on the exhibits for text or audio explanations, and some key areas have interactive screens with bilingual information. Lastly, it’s a good idea to go directly to the museum and ask at the service desk for more details about the available services.
We hope you have a great time at the Chinese Communist Party Museum!
Best Regards,
Ruqin China Travel Team
