Tourist Scams in China

What to notice, and how I usually handle these situations

If you’re visiting China for the first time, some situations may feel unfamiliar — especially in busy tourist areas.

Over the years, I’ve seen that most of these issues are not complicated. They tend to follow similar patterns, and once you understand how things normally work, they become much easier to spot and avoid.

In this section, I’ve noted a few situations that travelers sometimes run into, such as:

  • Unofficial taxi drivers approaching you at stations or airports
  • Prices that seem unclear or higher than expected in tourist areas
  • Friendly invitations to tea houses or small galleries
  • People offering “help” with tickets or directions
  • Goods presented as genuine when they are not

I’m not sharing these to make you cautious about everything. Most of your time in China will feel smooth and straightforward.

What helps is simply knowing what is normal — how a licensed taxi operates, how tickets are purchased, how payments are usually handled. Once you have that sense, anything unusual stands out quite naturally.

In my experience, a calm and steady approach is enough to avoid most problems.

If you have a little time before your trip, you can read through these notes. It will help you travel with a clearer sense of how things work, without needing to worry too much along the way.
