Tourist Scams in China

Let’s be real—scams and tourist traps aren’t just a “China thing.” Wherever people gather in large numbers, from London to Shanghai, there’s bound to be someone looking to take advantage. It’s just human nature. That’s why it’s so important to stay alert, trust your instincts, and remember: if something feels off or too good to be true, it probably is—no matter where you are in the world.

That said, China, like many popular travel destinations, has its share of common scams—especially in crowded tourist areas. From fake tours, counterfeit goods, overpriced tea ceremonies to shady taxis and fake tickets, the tricks vary but the goal is always the same. In this guide, I’ll walk you through some of the most common scams and traps I’ve seen or experienced firsthand, and how to avoid them. A bit of street smarts goes a long way, and with the right mindset, you’ll enjoy the beauty of China without falling for the bait.
