Mutianyu Great Wall

Mutianyu is my favorite section of the Great Wall for most first-time visitors. It combines magnificent scenery, beautifully restored walls, and a quieter atmosphere than many other popular sections, making it easy to appreciate both the history and the landscape.

Whether you take the cable car, ride the toboggan, or simply enjoy the walk, Mutianyu offers a rewarding Great Wall experience in every season.

Badaling is the most famous and most visited section of the Great Wall. Beautifully restored and easy to reach from Beijing, it offers impressive views and a chance to experience one of China’s most iconic landmarks.

Although it can be busy, good planning and the right timing will help you enjoy Badaling while making the most of your visit.

Gubeikou is one of my favorite sections for hikers and photographers who want to experience the Great Wall in a more natural setting. Much of the wall remains unrestored, revealing its original character and rich history.

With mountain views, quiet trails, and relatively few visitors, Gubeikou rewards those looking for a more adventurous Great Wall experience.

Because of its rugged terrain and limited facilities, careful preparation is essential before visiting Jiankou. The effort, however, is rewarded with unforgettable views.

Important note:

Parts of Jiankou are steep, rugged, and challenging.

I generally recommend it only for experienced hikers and visitors comfortable with difficult terrain. Some areas are not officially developed for tourism.

These walls provide a glimpse into the frontier history of northern China and are often far quieter than the sections near Beijing.

Which Great Wall section is best for first-time visitors?

For most visitors, I recommend Mutianyu. It offers beautiful scenery, good facilities, and a more relaxed experience than Badaling.

Is the Great Wall difficult to walk?

Some sections are easy, while others are physically demanding. Mutianyu and Badaling are suitable for most visitors, while Jiankou and parts of Gubeikou require much more effort.

Can I visit the Great Wall without a tour?

Yes. Many sections can be reached independently by public transportation, tourist buses, train, or private transfer.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn generally offer the most comfortable temperatures and the best scenery.
