Tourist Scams in China

China Travel Safety Guide — Common Scams and How to Avoid Them

Most travel in China feels smooth and straightforward. However, in busy tourist areas, some situations may feel unfamiliar at first.

Over the years, I have noticed clear patterns in these situations. Once you understand how things usually work, they become easier to recognize and handle.

In this China Tourist Scam section, I share common situations travelers may meet. For example, you may see unofficial taxi offers at stations or airports. Next, you may notice unclear pricing in tourist areas. Then, some places may offer “help” with tickets or directions. Meanwhile, shops or services may present goods that are not genuine.

I do not share this to create worry. Most of your time in China will feel safe and simple.

Instead, I focus on what normal travel looks like. For example, how official taxis work, how tickets are usually bought, and how payments are handled in daily life. Once you see this pattern, unusual situations become easier to notice.

Finally, a calm approach is enough in most cases. You do not need to overthink. You only need a basic sense of how things usually work.
