To face up to a punishment or ordeal; be confronted with the unpleasant consequences of one’s actions; to experience negative repercussions for one’s actions or words, especially those that one would expect to incur punishment.

The slang originated from military punishments in which defaulters were punished on a parade during which drums were beating.
