- a period of time that a worker or a soldier is allowed to be absent, especially to return temporarily to their own town or country

furlough 一词有三个意思：
第一：是暂时解雇，暂时休假（不带薪），就是你仍然受雇于你工作的公司，但你不能工作，也不能领取工资。有别于furlough， laid off 是下岗的意思，必须重新找工作。对雇主来说，furlough是在经济困难时期节省成本的一种方式。被暂时解雇的员工可以在雇佣合同允许的情况下也从事新的工作。
第二：给予政府或机构雇员(如士兵或公务员)的休假；
第三：允许囚犯离开监狱的一段时间
