Hey guys! I’ll be in Beijing for six days this July and really wanna squeeze in a trip to Chengde. Is it possible to do a day trip there and back? I’m mostly interested in seeing the Imperial Summer Palace, Little Potala Palace, and Puning Temple. Is that doable, or is it too rushed? What’s the best way to get there? Any tips would be awesome! Thanks!

Oh, absolutely, dude! A Chengde day trip from Beijing is totally doable, thanks to China’s crazy-fast high-speed trains. You can be in Chengde in about an hour, which means plenty of time to hit the major sights and still make it back to Beijing for dinner.

How to Get There:

  • Hop on a high-speed train from Beijing Qinghe or Beijing North Railway Station to Chengde South Railway Station. Super easy.
  • The ride is just about an hour, so if you catch an early train (say, around 6 AM), you’ll be in Chengde by 7 AM—plenty of time to explore!
  • For the return, there are trains running till 8 PM, so you won’t have to rush.

What to See (Without Feeling Like You’re Speedrunning China)

  1. Imperial Summer Palace of Mountain Resort – This place is massive! Think ancient emperors chilling in giant gardens, lakes, and palaces. Give yourself at least 3 hours here.
  2. Putuo Zongcheng Temple (Little Potala Palace) – Looks like the Potala Palace in Tibet but way easier to get to. Super photogenic. Budget 2 hours.
  3. Puning Temple – Has the tallest wooden Buddha in the world. Pretty mind-blowing. 1.5–2 hours should do it.

Pro Tips:

  • Buy train tickets in advance—weekends can get busy.
  • Use the Shuttle Bus, Didi (China’s Uber) or taxis to get around once you’re in Chengde. Way easier than figuring out buses.
  • Start early! The more time you have, the less rushed you’ll feel.
  • Wear comfy shoes—you’ll be walking a ton!

Verdict:

Yes, 100% possible and totally worth it! You’ll get to see some mind-blowing history, snap some killer photos, and still be back in Beijing in time to crash in your hotel. Go for it!
