Hi, I’m planning a trip to China and I’m a bit confused about how to handle payments there. I’ve heard cash isn’t used much, and Western credit cards aren’t accepted everywhere. What’s the best way to pay for things while I’m there? Thanks!

Hey there,
China's payment system is mostly digital. Cash is rarely used, and Western credit cards aren’t accepted in most places. Here's how to prepare for smooth payments:

  1. Download AliPay and WeChat Pay
These two apps are used everywhere in China, even by street vendors. Download them before you go. You can link your foreign cards to pay directly through these apps.

  2. Bring a Debit Card
Though you won’t need cash often, it’s good to have a debit card that works internationally. You can use it at ATMs to withdraw RMB if needed. Just remember, ATMs in China return money first, then your card, so don’t forget it!

  3. Carry some Cash just in case
It’s a good idea to bring a small amount of cash in case something goes wrong with your cards. You can exchange it if needed, though it’s easier at airports.

Other helpful apps:

  • Didi: Book taxis or luxury cars, similar to Uber. You can pay using AliPay, WeChat, or a linked foreign card.
  • Trip: For booking accommodation and travel within China, using your foreign card.

That’s it! Prepare with these tips, and you’ll be all set for your trip to China!
