Hi there, I’ll be visiting Beijing in May and want to ask if there’s a place near the Forbidden City where I can leave my luggage. I’d prefer not to carry it around while I explore the Palace. Thanks so much!

Hey There,

Free Luggage Storage and Handling Services

Visiting the Forbidden City (also known as the Palace Museum) just got easier, thanks to their free luggage storage and baggage handling services. If you're traveling with larger items like suitcases (over 20 inches), you don't need to carry them around as you explore the museum.

Before you enter, simply drop off your bags at the Visitor Service Center located on the west side of Duanmen Square, which is just beside the entrance. Once you're done touring the museum, you can pick up your belongings from Shenwumen Gate (the north exit). This service is completely free, and the luggage transfer is seamless, so you can enjoy your visit without the hassle of carrying extra weight. Duanmen Square is situated on Beijing’s central axis, between Tiananmen Square and the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City.

However, keep in mind that while the museum provides storage for large bags, valuable items like electronics or jewelry cannot be stored. Be sure to keep these items with you. Additionally, things like scooters or picnic carts aren’t allowed inside, except for wheelchairs and strollers, which are permitted.

Here’s how it works:

  • Storage hours: 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM (during peak season, from April to October) and 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM (during the off-peak season, November to March).
  • Pickup hours: 9:30 AM to 5:10 PM (during peak season) and 9:30 AM to 4:40 PM (during off-peak season).

The process is simple: go through a quick security check, store your bags, and receive a luggage tag. When you’re ready to leave, head to Shenwumen Square (the north exit) to collect your belongings.

So, why does the Forbidden City offer this free service? The main reason is to protect its ancient structures. Large bags can cause damage to delicate floor patterns or scratch the walls, potentially harming the museum’s priceless heritage. This thoughtful service ensures your comfort while helping preserve the Forbidden City for future generations.
