Hi Daniel,

Do you have any recommendations for things to do in Beijing. I will be visiting during the dragon boat holiday period.

Thanks, David

Hi David,

Great to hear from you again!

You’re in for a real treat—Beijing during the Dragon Boat Festival is vibrant and full of energy. There are some exciting events lined up this year that I think you'll enjoy.

One of the highlights is the Dragon Boat Race on May 31st, held along the Grand Canal in Tongzhou District. The races run from 9 AM to noon, featuring both 200m and 500m sprint races with teams from different groups—it's a great spectacle and a fun cultural experience!

Right in the same area, there's also the Canal Dragon Boat Carnival happening from May 31st to June 2nd. Besides the dragon boat races, the carnival includes fun competitions like dragon boat tug-of-war, paddle board races, kayaking, and even arm wrestling! It’s all about celebrating traditional Chinese culture through sports and community events.

If you’re looking for something more family-oriented or a day trip idea, Gubei Water Town near the Simatai Great Wall will be hosting a “Children’s Dragon Boat Festival” over the same dates. It’s filled with family-friendly, interactive activities set against a scenic, old-town backdrop. Tickets start at around 80 RMB.

Just a heads-up: the Dragon Boat Festival is a 3-day national holiday in China ( May 1 - June 2), so it’s a peak travel period. Expect large crowds at popular attractions and events, and it’s a good idea to plan ahead—especially with transportation and accommodation.

Let me know if you'd like help with directions, bookings, or navigating the crowds. Always happy to help!

Safe travels and enjoy the festival vibes in Beijing,
Daniel
