I’m heading to Mongolia this August and I’m looking to travel on the K23 train from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar. But I’m struggling to find any recent updates about whether it’s back in service or still on hold.
Has anyone got the latest info or know where I can find it?
Appreciate any help, thanks!

Hi,
the K23/K24 trains between Beijing and Ulaanbaatar have been out of service since February 2020 due to infrastructure updates, you can still travel via the Hohhot or Erlian route, which involves transfers. You should take the train or flight from Beijing to Hohhot or Erlian. Then take the international train to Ulaanbaartar.
The international train from Hohhot to Ulaanbaatar is resuming on March 15, 2024. It will run every Monday and Friday from Hohhot Station with train number 4652/3, passing through the Erlianhot border and then changing to Train 33 heading to Ulaanbaatar. On the return journey, the train departs from Ulaanbaatar Station on Monday and Friday, with Train 34 first, and after crossing the Erlianhot border, it switches to Train 4654/1 heading back to Hohhot.
Ticket Prices and How to Buy
There isn't any specific ticket price info yet, but here’s how you can buy tickets:
- You can purchase tickets at the international ticket window (Window 10) at Hohhot Station.
- You can also buy them at the direct train ticket window at Erlianhot Station.
Travel Time and Frequency
- Travel Time: From Hohhot, via Erlianhot, and finally to Ulaanbaatar, the journey takes around 36 hours.
- Frequency: The train runs once a week, on Monday and Friday.
Travel Tips
- Visa: You’ll need to get your visa in advance or prepare visa-free documents if applicable.
- Ticket Purchase: Only cash payments are accepted at domestic stations, and tickets are paper tickets, so keep them safe during the trip.
- Customs: You’ll need to go through customs at the Erlianhot border before boarding the train.
Have a nice trip to Ulaanbaatar!
