Hey there,
We’ll be wrapping up a hiking tour in Nepal and finishing in Kathmandu on September 1, 2025. After that, we’re looking to spend about 9 days exploring Tibet before heading back to the US.
Can you give us some advice on how to make the trip from Kathmandu to Tibet? Is there a good way to do a return trip? Also, any recommendations for tour companies, visa info, and must-see places in Tibet?
Thanks a lot!
Hi,
That sounds like an amazing trip you’ve got planned! Heading from Kathmandu to Tibet is a great idea since you’ll be so close, and there are a few ways to do it. Here’s the scoop on your questions:
Getting to Tibet from Kathmandu
You have two main options for traveling from Kathmandu to Tibet:
- By flight: The easiest and quickest way is to fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Flights are available, and the journey usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
- By overland tour: If you prefer an adventure, you can take an overland tour by car or bus from Kathmandu to Lhasa. This option is scenic and gives you a chance to see more of the Tibetan landscape, but it’s longer—about 6-7 days of travel due to the altitude and distance.
Tour Companies
There are several travel agencies in Kathmandu that specialize in Tibet tours. Many of these companies offer both guided tours and the necessary logistics, including permits, transportation, and accommodations. Some popular agencies are:
- Tibet Travel
- Nepal-Tibet Trekking
- Trans Himalayan Travel
It’s best to book a tour with one of these agencies in advance, as Tibet requires a special permit (Tibet Travel Permit) that they can help arrange.
Visa and Permits
You’ll need two things to enter Tibet:
- Chinese Visa: Since Tibet is part of China, you’ll need a Chinese visa. This can be arranged through the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu.
- Tibet Travel Permit: This is the special permit for Tibet, which can only be obtained through an authorized tour operator. You can’t travel to Tibet independently—it must be done as part of an organized tour.
What to See and Do in Tibet
Tibet is absolutely breathtaking, and you’ve got 9 days to explore, so here are some highlights you shouldn't miss:
- Lhasa: Visit the iconic Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street for the full spiritual experience.
- Namtso Lake: Known for its stunning beauty, this high-altitude lake is perfect for a peaceful escape.
- Mount Everest Base Camp: If you’re feeling adventurous, a trip to Everest Base Camp from Tibet is doable and offers jaw-dropping views.
- Gyantse & Shigatse: These two cities are home to beautiful monasteries like Pelkor Chode Monastery and the Tashilhunpo Monastery.
In general, Tibet is full of spiritual sites, stunning landscapes, and a very unique culture. You’ll definitely want to take it slow due to the high altitude—your body will need time to adjust!
