Hi Daniel,
If we take Shanghai long distance bus to XiTang Bus Station (which is also called Jiashan North Bus Station?), is it we can store luggage there? - Long distance bus can allow us to store luggage at bottom or in bus?
- Then from luggage storage place, we all 15mins to XiTang water town?
- Could you kindly send the Shanghai departure bus stations and timetable?
very appreciative of yr kind help 🙂  Felix

Hi Felix,
I’d be happy to clarify your travel options to Xitang Water Town.
Here are the direct bus options from Shanghai to Xitang Water Town:

Shanghai South Long-Distance Bus Station 上海长途客运南站 (建议南站出发)
Departure Time: 7:10 AM – 5:54 PM (every 1-2 hours)
Duration: ~1.5 hours (may take up to 2 hours during peak times)
Ticket Price: ~39 RMB (varies by bus type)
Shanghai General Long-Distance Bus Station 上海汽车客运总站
Departure Time: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Duration: ~1.5–2 hours
Ticket Price: Similar to South Station

Shanghai Hongqiao Long-Distance Bus Station 上海长途客运虹桥站
Suitable for travelers near Hongqiao transport hub (timings similar to the South & General stations)

Shanghai North Bus Terminal (Changtu North Station) 长途公司北区客运站
Departure Time: 7:50 AM, 12:30 PM (only two buses per day)
Ticket Price: ~17 RMB (economy bus)

All these buses arrive at Xitang Bus Station (also called Jiashan North Station). From there, it’s just a 7-minute walk or a 3-minute rickshaw ride to the entrance of Xitang Water Town.

Note: You can purchase a same-day ticket here to Jiashan South Station (Bus K222 directly to Jiashan South Station).

Luggage Handling & Storage
You can bring small handbags onboard.
Large suitcases can be stored in the bottom luggage compartment of the bus.
Upon arrival at Xitang, you can store your luggage at the bus station.

Once you arrive in Shanghai, you can confirm the departure bus station with your hotel staff to ensure a smooth trip. It may seem complicated now, but once you're there, everything will be quite manageable.

How to book the Bus tickets?

Beside booking the bus tickets on site, you can book the bus ticktets online through WeChat:

Just open WeChat and search for “同程旅行” (Tongcheng Travel). You’ll see two official accounts pop up—one’s a mini program (小程序), the other’s a public account (公众号). Go with the mini program. It’s the one labeled “同程旅行订酒店机票火车票拼车门票.”

Once you’re in, tap on “汽车票” (Bus Tickets). Then just type in your start and end points—like Shanghai and Xitang—and you’ll be able to book your bus tickets right there. Super handy!

Hope you have a nice trip!
Best regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel, I went to the Wechat site you mentioned below.  We are staying at the Bund area in Shanghai.
1) 3 Apr 2025: we would like to leave Shanghai for XiTang at about 9am if possible. When I as going to select 'JiaShan North Bus Station', 'XiTang scenic area' popped up. Are we able to store luggage at XiTang scenic entry point, then tour for 2 hours? (Not staying overnight there)?
2) If no storage there, which 'JiaShan' station name should we indicated for 'JiaShan North Bus Station' pls? (There's a JiaShan Ke Yun Zhong Xing', n another name - a bit configured which.
May I trouble you to tell me what specifically to book pls? Sorry to trouble you again.
Have a good nite 🙂
Regards, Felix

Hi Felix,

Please find below the step by step booking guide for your bus from Shanghai to Xitang with luggage tips:

Choosing the Right Destination

When booking your bus ticket on the Tongcheng (同程) mini program, make sure to select “Xitang Scenic Area (西塘景区)” as your destination. This way, you’ll arrive directly near the scenic area parking lot — no need to transfer.

Avoid choosing “Jiashan County Bus Station (嘉善县客运站)” as your stop. If you do, you’ll have to take a taxi or a local bus to Xitang Ancient Town, which takes about 30 minutes. Not ideal, especially if you’re only planning to stay for a short visit (around 2 hours).

How to Book Your Ticket on Tongcheng
  1. Open the Tongcheng mini program.

  2. Go to the Bus Tickets section.

  3. Set your departure city as Shanghai.

  4. Type in “Xitang Scenic Area” as your destination and confirm the stop.

  5. Pick a suitable time, fill in passenger info, and complete your booking.

Luggage Storage Info

Xitang does offer luggage storage services inside the scenic area. I haven’t personally used them, but from what I’ve gathered, you can usually find storage at the Tourist Service Center near the entrance or close to the main parking area.

Once you arrive, it’s best to ask a staff member where exactly to store your bags.

To save time and make your trip easier, always try to book a direct bus to Xitang Scenic Area, and plan ahead for where you’ll leave your luggage.

Extra Tip: If Luggage Storage Isn’t Available

If you suddenly find there’s no storage available — in Xitang or any other travel spot — don’t stress. Just search for the “Cun Zhiji (存知己)” mini program on WeChat. It helps you find nearby places to store your luggage quickly and easily.

Hope this helps. Any questions, just let us know.

Best,
Daniel

Hi Daniel
Sorry to bother you, initial steps are good but when I wanted to 'add Passenger', I don't seem to be able to indicate as 'Passport' nor key in my Passport Number, as there was already in place: '身份证‘ (doesn't allow change to Passport'), n below it is space for I think, local Identity card number (with only 'X' and numbers.
Kindly advise.  Thanks!

Felix

Hi Felix,

So sorry about that — I forgot you’re booking with a passport.

Unfortunately, the Tongcheng Travel platform (同程旅行) isn’t very international-friendly and mainly supports Chinese ID cards, which is why you’re seeing the '身份证' field and can't switch it to 'Passport'.

Do you happen to have a Trip.com or 12306 account? Both their apps support passport bookings. Trip.com is very international-friendly, and 12306 APP has improved a lot lately as well. Either one should work well for booking coach tickets.

I just tested both the Trip.com app and the 12306 app for booking bus tickets, and both worked smoothly. So either one should be a good option for you.

Note: I had a look, and while the 12306 app does have the function to book bus tickets, it seems that feature isn't available on their official website (12306 CHINA RAILWAY).

Let me know how you go, or if you need a hand with anything!

Warm regards,
Daniel

Hi Felix,

No worries at all, and you're very welcome—happy to help, weekend or not!

About the bus tickets—Oops, I kind of took it for granted at first. In mainland China, we usually use the Chinese version of Ctrip (ctrip.com) which does have a section for booking long-distance buses. I just assumed the international Trip.com version would have the same, but turns out it doesn’t offer bus bookings at the moment. Since Trip.com is more geared for international users, it doesn’t include that option yet.

The Chinese Ctrip site unfortunately needs a Chinese phone number and ID to register, so that’s not really a workaround for you either.

One alternative is using the China Railway 12306 app, which is the official app for trains—and in the Chinese version, it also offers bus tickets! The English version doesn't, though. A lot of travelers say it's easier to register the English version with a passport. What you can try is:

  1. Download the 12306 English app and register using your passport.

  2. Once registered, go to the bottom tab “Me” or “My”.

  3. Tap the little gear icon in the top right (Settings).

  4. Find “Language Settings” and switch it to Simplified Chinese.

  5. Once you’ve switched to the Chinese interface, the bus ticket option should show up under the homepage or “More” tab.

Alternatively, if you’re up for it, you can also try registering directly in the Chinese version of 12306, but I’ve heard it’s a bit more tedious with a passport, but it still works.

Give that a shot and see how it goes! I also just learned that bus ticket booking is a bit trickier than I thought. But don’t worry—we’ll figure it out one way or another. Worst case, you can always buy bus tickets directly at the station a bit in advance.

Let me know how it goes!

Warm regards,
Daniel
