A layover in Beijing can be an exciting opportunity to explore one of the world’s most vibrant and historic cities, even if you only have 24 hours. The city boasts a rich cultural heritage, incredible sights, and, of course, the world-famous Great Wall. This guide will help you make the most of your short stay, ensuring you get a taste of Beijing’s unique charm and history.
Visa-Free Transit: Making It Possible
Before diving into the itinerary, it’s crucial to understand China’s visa-free transit policy. Travelers from 53 countries can enjoy a 24-hour, 72-hour, or even a 240-Hour visa-free transit in Beijing.

1. Beijing Layover Guide: Getting from the Airport to the City
Planning a self-guided layover tour in Beijing? If you’re eligible for the visa-free transit policy, you’re in for an unforgettable mini-adventure. The first step: getting from the airport to downtown Beijing quickly and easily.

Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is located about 30 kilometers from the city center. After clearing immigration (look for the Visa-free transit lanes), head to the Airport Express Train. It’s fast, affordable (just 25 RMB), and reaches the city in about 30 minutes, with connections to subway lines 2 and 10. Taxis are also available and take 45–60 minutes, depending on traffic, with fares around 100–150 RMB.
Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX), though newer and farther out, is equally convenient. The sleek Daxing Airport Express will whisk you into the city in 40–50 minutes for around 35 RMB. Trains run frequently, and signage is tourist-friendly. A taxi will cost 150–200 RMB and takes about an hour.
Whether you land at PEK or PKX, both airports are well-equipped to help you make the most of your layover. With smooth transport connections, downtown Beijing — and its rich history, food, and culture — is just a ride away.
2. Explore Beijing City Highlights on a Layover
Got a morning or afternoon layover in Beijing and qualify for China’s visa-free transit policy? You’re perfectly positioned to dive into the heart of the capital and soak in centuries of imperial history and local charm — all within a few unforgettable hours.

Start at Tiananmen Square, one of the world’s largest public squares, surrounded by historic landmarks like the Great Hall of the People. Just across the street, step into the grand Forbidden City, where emperors once ruled. Give yourself at least 1.5 to 2 hours to wander through its majestic halls and courtyards.
Next, take a short walk to Jingshan Park, directly behind the palace. Climb to the top for a panoramic view over the Forbidden City’s golden roofs — a hidden gem many travelers miss!
If time allows, hop in a cab or Didi to Shichahai or Nanluoguxiang, charming hutong neighborhoods where you can sip tea, try local snacks, and catch a glimpse of traditional Beijing life.
This compact tour fits well into a 6–8 hour layover and gives you a true taste of Beijing’s cultural richness. Don’t forget your passport and arrival documents — and keep an eye on the time!
3. Visit Mutianyu Great Wall on a Layover
If your layover in Beijing falls in the morning or afternoon and you’re eligible for China’s visa-free transit policy, you’re in luck — it’s the perfect chance to explore one of the world’s most iconic landmarks: the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall.

Located about 1.5 hours from Beijing Capital Airport, Mutianyu is one of the most accessible and well-preserved parts of the Wall. It’s less crowded than Badaling and offers breathtaking views of forested hills and stone towers stretching into the distance.
Start your layover tour early — especially if your flight arrives in the morning. Take a private transfer or book a layover-friendly tour with pickup and drop-off at the airport. Once there, you can choose to hike up or take the cable car for a more relaxed experience. Feeling adventurous? Ride the toboggan slide back down!
Plan for at least 5–6 hours round-trip, including travel time. Don’t forget your passport and make sure your flight schedule allows a comfortable buffer.
A visit to Mutianyu turns a simple layover into an unforgettable glimpse into China’s ancient greatness — fresh mountain air, stunning views, and a memory to last a lifetime.
4. Explore Beijing on a Night Layover
If you’re transiting through Beijing with a layover of up to 144 hours and qualify for China’s visa-free transit policy, don’t waste your evening in the airport — step out and experience Beijing’s night magic! The capital truly comes alive after dark, blending ancient beauty with modern glow.

Start your night at Tiananmen Square, where the vast open space glows under soft lighting, with the Forbidden City’s Gate of Heavenly Peace standing proudly behind. From there, take a short stroll to Qianmen Street, a pedestrian-only zone full of traditional shops, local snacks, and photogenic architecture.
Hop in a taxi or Didi (the local ride-hailing app) to reach the Houhai Lakes area, where you can sip tea or try local craft beer in cozy courtyard bars. Red lanterns reflect on the water, and soft music fills the air.
End the night with a view of the illuminated Bird’s Nest and Water Cube in the Olympic Park — both stunning in their night-time glory.
Even with just a few hours, Beijing’s rich history and vibrant culture await. Just remember to plan ahead and make sure your layover allows enough time to return for your next flight — and bring a jacket if it’s autumn or winter!
Practical Tips for a 24-Hour Layover in Beijing
Got a 24-hour layover in Beijing? Thanks to China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy, you can turn that layover into a whirlwind day of discovery — no visa needed! Here are some practical tips to make the most of your short adventure:
1. Plan Ahead: Know what you want to see — whether it’s the Great Wall at Mutianyu, the Forbidden City, or a relaxing walk through hutongs like Nanluoguxiang. Prioritize 2–3 key sights based on your arrival time.
2. Entry and Transport: After landing at Beijing Capital (PEK) or Daxing (PKX), follow signs for the visa-free entry, then take the airport express train or a taxi to downtown. Budget 1–1.5 hours for the whole process.

I have a layover in Bejing from 2pm until 10:30 am the next day. I really want to visit the Great wall before sunset. In January, sunset us around 5PM, so i hope to leave the Airport by 3PM. I should arrive hopefully at the great wall by 4:30 PM, giving me about 30 minutes to enjoy the view befor it gets dark. Do you think plan is realistic? or its not enough time ?
Dear Benny,
Thank you for reaching out to Ruqin China Travel!
I’m delighted to hear about your interest in visiting the Great Wall during your layover in Beijing. I’ll do my best to help you make the most of your visit.
Since you have a layover from 2:00 pm until 10:30 am the following day, visiting the Great Wall is possible, but the timing will be tight given the winter sunset. Here are some important considerations:
Airport Location: Beijing has two major airports—Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX). Travel time from Capital Airport to the nearest Great Wall section (Mutianyu) is approximately 1.5 hours, while from Daxing it could take 2 hours or more, depending on traffic.
Great Wall Visit Timing: Most sections of the Great Wall ticketing till 4:30 pm and close by 5:30 pm in January. Arriving by 4:30 pm will likely give you limited time to explore, even worse, you possibly cannot buy the tickets (last entry at 4:30). Lighting may be insufficient by that hour, especially during winter.
Two Suggested Plans:
Recommended Plan A: Choose the nearest section of the Great Wall to save time and arrive at the Wall before 4:30 PM ( the last entry time ). We suggest you see the sunset at Juyongguan Great Wall ( Juyong Pass) instead of going to either Mutianyu or Badaling. Click the link for more information about Juyonghuan Great Wall: https://rachelmeetschina.com/2022/03/31/juyongguan-great-wall-visit-the-juyong-pass-in-beijing/
Recommended Plan B : For a more relaxed and fulfilling experience, you might consider visiting the Great Wall in the early morning before your departure. Starting as early as possible could provide you with a few peaceful hours at the Wall and a scenic sunrise experience, depending on weather conditions.
Looking forward to helping you create a memorable layover in Beijing!
Warm regards,
Daniel
