The most fastest option: Take Subway Line 8
My real route to the Meridian Gate: Take Subway Line 8 to Jinyu Hutong Station (Exit C), then walk to the Forbidden City’s Meridian Gate. It’s the most convenient option — no security check required along the route.
The first time I visited the Forbidden City, I made the same mistake most travelers do.
I followed the crowd toward Tiananmen.
Big mistake.
Long lines. Heavy security. Slow progress.
Later, I learned a quieter route. Now I use it every time. And honestly, this is the Fastest Way to Get to the Forbidden City if you want to reach the Meridian Gate without stress.
Let me show you.
My Go-To Route: Donghuamen First, Then Walk to Meridian Gate
First, aim for Donghuamen Gate (东华门).
Donghuamen Gate (东华门)
Don’t try to enter there. It’s an exit only.
Instead, you walk along the inner moat, right beside the palace wall.
Next, you head west for about 10 minutes.
That’s roughly 590 meters.
Walk from Donghuamen Gate to Meridian Gate (roughly 400–500 meters)
Then you arrive at Meridian Gate (午门) — the only official entrance to the Forbiddden City.
No Tiananmen security.
No park tickets.
Just a calm walk and you’re there.

From Donghuamen to the ticket gate of the Forbidden City, it takes about 10 minutes.
From subway line 8 Jinyu Hutong Station Exit C to Meridian Gate, about 20 minutes total (1.2km).
That’s why I call this the Fastest Way to Get to the Forbidden City.
How You Get to Donghuamen (Two Easy Options)
Option 1: Taxi (Easiest)
Tell your driver: Donghuamen Gate (东华门)
You step out.
Then you walk west along the wall.
No checkpoints in between.
Simple.
Option 2: Subway (My Favorite)
Take Subway Line 8 and get off at Jinyu Hutong Station (金鱼胡同).
Exit at C.
Now here’s the easy part.
First, turn right (west) as soon as you exit from Exit C. You’ll be on Donganmen Avenue (东安门大街）.
Next, follow the crowd heading west. Most people around you are walking toward the Forbidden City.
Keep walking straight. Soon, Donganmen Avenue connects directly to Donghuamen Street (东华门大街).
Continue west along Donghuamen Street.
After about 720 meters—roughly 10 to 12 minutes on foot—you’ll get to Donghuamen Gate ahead.
From there, just turn left and walk along the palace wall toward the Meridian Gate entrance.
No checkpoints.
No park entrances.
Just take a calm sidewalk beside the palace wall from Donghuamen Gate to the Meridian Gate for about 590 meters.
Meanwhile, notice how quiet it feels compared to Tiananmen.
That calm?
That’s time saved.
From Exit C to the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City, I usually spend about 25 minutes total (1.2km ).
Simple. Direct. Reliable.
This is why I always recommend this route to friends visiting Beijing for the first time.
Why This Route Works So Well
First, you avoid Tiananmen security entirely.
That alone saves huge time.
Next, the walk stays clear and direct.
No parks. No extra tickets.
In addition, you don’t zigzag through crowds.
From Jinyu Hutong Exit C to Meridian Gate, I usually spend about 25 minutes.
For first-time visitors, this is hands down the Fastest Way to Get to the Forbidden City.
A Trap to Avoid (I Tried This Once)
Some people suggest buying a cheap ticket to the Imperial Ancestral Temple and cutting through.
That used to work.
However, now it also has long lines.
Unless it’s low season — or you truly want to visit the temple — skip it.
Same goes for Zhongshan Park.
It works, yes.
But you still queue.
If speed matters, stick with Donghuamen.
Important Reminder Before You Go
Here’s something many travelers miss:
The only entrance to the Forbidden City is Meridian Gate.
Donghuamen, Xihuamen, and Shenwumen are exits only.
So always plan your route to Meridian Gate.
My Final Advice
If you want history, take your time inside.
But to get there?
Be smart.
Go quiet.
Go east first.
Then walk west.
That’s how I arrive relaxed.
That’s how you skip chaos.
And that’s how you reach the palace gates smoothly — especially if this is your first Beijing visit.
