Museum of the Communist Party of China: Visit Without Booking

I still remember stepping into the Museum of the Communist Party of China (CPC Museum) (中国共产党历史展览馆) on a quiet Beijing morning. Outside, the scale felt imposing. But once inside, the experience slowed into something more reflective—dimly lit halls, carefully preserved relics, and a timeline that quietly unfolds from 1921 onward.

As I moved through the galleries, I wasn’t just reading history—I was walking through it. The CPC Museum doesn’t rush you. Instead, it invites you to pause, look closely, and piece together a century that continues to shape modern China in ways you’ll feel long after you leave.

1. How to Get to Museum of the Communist Party of China

The first time I went to the Museum of the Communist Party of China (CPC Museum), I tested both routes just to see which felt easier on foot. If you take Subway Line 8, get off at Olympic Park Station (奥林匹克公园) and leave from Exit B—then it’s about an 11-minute walk heading east. It’s a clean, open stretch, and honestly quite pleasant in the morning.

On another visit, I tried Line 15 instead. From Anli Road Station (安立路), Exit A, you walk about 12 minutes west. This route felt a bit more direct, but slightly less scenic. Either way, the walk is simple, and you won’t feel lost getting there.

If you prefer the bus, routes 311, 379, and 484 stop at Baofang West Station (豹房西站), while 311, 319, 379, 450, 466, 484, and 695 reach Waoli Nankou Station(洼里南口车站).

If you’re driving, you’ll find paid parking at the P4 lot south of the exhibition hall or at China Film International Cinema’s ground parking.

The museum sits at 9 Beichen East Road, Chaoyang District(北京市朝阳区北辰东路9号), right beside the Olympic Park’s striking dragon-shaped water system.

2. Opening Hours and Ticket Reservation

The first time I planned my visit to the Museum of the Communist Party of China (CPC Museum) (中国共产党历史展览馆), I expected the usual reservation process. But things have changed. Since January 1, 2026, you no longer need to book in advance. Just bring your valid ID and enter through the south gate of the West Square or the north entrance on Basement Level 1 after a standard security check.

The museum opens from 9:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00, and it’s closed every Monday unless it’s a public holiday. Entry is completely free, and your ID—whether it’s a passport or Chinese ID—acts as your ticket.

What I didn’t expect was that the same entry also gives you access to the nearby China Arts and Crafts Museum. Just keep in mind, temporary closures can happen during major events, so it’s always worth checking ahead.

3. The Layout of the CPC Musuem

The CPC Museum, a new red landmark in Beijing, lies north along the city’s central axis, near the Olympic Park. Its design, a blend of grandeur and innovation, reflects the Party’s history and ethos.

The museum’s “工”-shaped structure, with its traditional colonnades, embodies solemnity and uniqueness, echoing the founding architectural style of the nation.

The exhibition spans 16,800 square meters, with a 3,400-meter journey through history. It’s divided into four sections, mirroring the historical phases of the Chinese nation with its theme of “Never forget the original heart and remember the mission”.

The museum showcases over 2,600 photos and 3,500 cultural relics, offering a comprehensive and epic portrayal of the CPC’s century-long journey.

4. English Services for Foreign Visitors

When I first visited the Museum of the Communist Party of China (中国共产党历史展览馆), I was curious how accessible it would feel without strong Chinese. It’s more foreigner-friendly than you might expect, but you do need to plan just a little.

The museum does offer professional English-speaking guides. If you prefer exploring at your own pace, I found the audio guide much easier—you can rent one near the entrance for a small fee, and English is available.

That said, not everything is translated. Some sections include English captions or multimedia support, but not all. I learned quickly to slow down, focus on key exhibits, and let the overall story come together gradually rather than trying to catch every detail.

5. Museum of the Communist Party of China Visiting Notice

When visiting the CPC Museum, respect and adherence to regulations are paramount. Prohibited items include political or religious propaganda, commercial materials, inflammable substances, pets, liquids, large bags, and professional photography gear.

Visits are organized on a reservation and off-peak basis, with no entry for those displaying symptoms like fever. Intoxicated individuals, drug users, or those in inappropriate attire (like barefoot or in slippers) aren’t allowed, and minors, elderly, or those with mobility issues require an adult companion.

Photography is restricted, especially of exhibits marked ‘No Photo.’ For conducting lectures, surveys, recordings, or performances, prior permission from the museum is necessary. Unauthorized explanations of exhibits by non-museum staff are not allowed. Please also refrain from using the museum’s power supply.
