If you miss a train in China, speak to railway staff or open the official 12306 app immediately. Subject to seat availability, you may change your ticket once: changing to another train on the same day is normally free, while changing to a later date may involve a fee.
Do not simply buy another ticket before checking your original booking. You may still be able to use its value.
First, Confirm That You Have Really Missed the Train
The departure time on your ticket is the time the train leaves, not the boarding time.
Boarding gates close before departure. The precise closing time varies by station and train, so you may be refused entry even if the train is still standing at the platform.
If the gate has closed, show your passport and booking details to a railway employee. Ask whether you can still board before assuming that the journey is lost.

我错过火车了，请问可以改签吗？
Wǒ cuòguò huǒchē le, qǐngwèn kěyǐ gǎiqiān ma?
“I missed my train. Can I change my ticket?”
Can You Change a Ticket After the Train Has Left?
Yes, in many cases.
Under China Railway’s passenger rules effective from June 1, 2026, a passenger who misses a train may change the ticket before midnight on the date printed on it. The new train must have an available seat, berth, or standing ticket.
The main choices are:

The 40% fee is calculated using the lower fare when the original and new tickets have different prices. You must also pay any fare difference if the new ticket costs more.
If the new ticket costs less, the fare difference is returned after any applicable deduction.
Where Can You Change the Ticket?
You may be able to change it through:
- The official Railway 12306 app or website
- A staffed ticket or service counter
- A ticket machine that supports ticket changes
A staffed service counter in Beijing South Railway Station
Foreign travelers using passports may find the staffed counter easier, particularly if the app account, passport verification, or payment arrangement causes a problem.
Bring the original passport used to buy the ticket. Keep the train number and booking confirmation ready on your phone.
If you paid in cash, you normally need to complete the change at a station ticket counter. You may also need the counter if you have already collected a printed reimbursement receipt.
If you booked through a third-party platform, check that platform first. Its procedure and service charges may differ from those of 12306.
You Can Normally Change a Ticket Only Once
China Railway allows one change for each eligible ticket.
If you already changed the ticket before missing the new train, you normally cannot change it again. Do not make a hurried change until you are confident that you can catch the replacement.
After a departure has passed, a changed ticket is generally not refundable. If your plans remain uncertain, ask railway staff to explain the conditions before confirming the change.
What If Trains Are Sold Out?
A change depends on available capacity. During weekends, summer holidays, National Day, Chinese New Year, and other busy periods, later trains may already be full.
Check several possibilities:
- A later train on the same route
- A slower conventional train
- A train from another station in the same city
- A train to a nearby station
- A departure the following day
Be careful when choosing a different station. Large cities often have several railway stations that are far apart. Allow enough time to travel there and pass security again.
If no suitable replacement is available, ask whether a standing ticket or waitlist option is possible. Do not assume that railway staff can create a seat on a sold-out train.
Can You Get a Refund Instead?
An ordinary refund should normally be requested before the train’s scheduled departure.
After departure, the rules are much more restrictive. China Railway’s English guidance says that a post-departure refund may be considered within two hours only in special circumstances and with approval from the responsible station manager. This is an exception, not a right you should depend on.
A ticket changed after departure cannot normally be refunded.
If you missed the train because of a railway disruption rather than your own late arrival, speak to staff. Different arrangements may apply when the railway is responsible.
What If You Miss a Connecting Train?
If both trains were booked separately, China Railway may treat them as two independent journeys. Missing the second train does not automatically guarantee a free replacement.
Go directly to a service counter and show both bookings. Keep any delay notice or other evidence explaining why you missed the connection.
If the railway arranged the connecting itinerary or a delay caused by the railway made the connection impossible, ask staff what protection applies. The practical solution depends on how the tickets were issued and why the connection failed.
For future journeys, leave a generous transfer period. Changing trains in a large Chinese station may require you to leave one platform, follow transfer signs, pass another ticket check, and walk a considerable distance.
Cross-Border Trains Have Different Rules
Do not automatically apply the mainland domestic rules to cross-border journeys.
Tickets involving Hong Kong West Kowloon and international services such as the China–Laos Railway have separate conditions. Deadlines, change options, fees, and permitted booking channels may differ.
Check the rules attached to the particular ticket before traveling.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Avoid these easily made mistakes:
- Buying a second ticket without checking whether the first can be changed
- Leaving the station before speaking to railway staff
- Waiting until the next day to deal with the missed ticket
- Forgetting the passport used for booking
- Assuming a ticket can be changed several times
- Choosing a replacement from another station without checking the distance
- Confirming a new train that you may also be unable to catch
- Assuming a changed post-departure ticket can later be refunded
