For a first trip to Shanghai, I would choose the area before choosing the hotel.
A beautiful hotel in the wrong part of the city can mean unnecessary taxi rides every day. A simpler hotel near a useful metro station can make the whole trip easier.
Shanghai Best Area to Stay Map
For most first-time visitors, my three practical choices are People’s Square, Jing’an and the Bund/Nanjing East Road area.
People’s Square: Best for Pure Convenience
If this is your first Shanghai trip and you want the easiest transport base, People’s Square is hard to beat.
Metro Lines 1, 2 and 8 meet here. Line 2 is especially useful because it connects central Shanghai with Jing’an Temple, East Nanjing Road, Lujiazui, Hongqiao Railway Station and Pudong Airport.

You are also close to Nanjing Road, People’s Park, Shanghai Museum and many central shopping streets.
The drawback is atmosphere. People’s Square is practical rather than romantic. I would stay here because it works, not because I want to spend every evening around the hotel.
Jing’an: Better for Neighborhood Life
Jing’an is the area I often prefer for travelers staying four or five nights.
It feels more residential and lived-in than the Bund. There are restaurants, cafes, malls and tree-lined streets in several directions.
Jing’an Temple station is served by Lines 2, 7 and 14. Line 2 gives direct access toward People’s Square, East Nanjing Road, Lujiazui, Hongqiao and Pudong Airport.
Shanghai Jing’an Temple
This makes Jing’an a strong compromise between sightseeing convenience and everyday Shanghai.
But there is one important point: do not choose Jing’an if your main reason for paying extra is a Huangpu River view.
A recent traveler specifically asked whether a high-floor Jing’an hotel would provide a meaningful Bund or river view. Local responses pointed out that Jing’an is simply too far west for that to be the main attraction.
The Bund and East Nanjing Road: Best for the Classic First View
If your Shanghai dream is walking out of the hotel and seeing the Huangpu River, historic Bund buildings and Pudong skyline, stay closer to the Bund.
This is especially attractive for a short first visit of one or two nights.

You can walk the waterfront early in the morning before the main crowds arrive, then return again after dark.
Shanghai’s own tourism data shows how central the Bund remains to visitor activity: the Bund, Lujiazui and Yu Garden together received tens of millions of visits in the first half of 2026.
The disadvantage is price. Hotels with real river views can be expensive, and some properties advertised as “near the Bund” may still require a reasonable walk.
Always check the exact map location.
What About the Former French Concession?
For repeat visitors, I like this area very much.
For a first visit, it also works if your interests lean toward street walking, cafes, architecture and local neighborhoods.
Areas around Wukang Road, Anfu Road, South Shaanxi Road and Xintiandi can feel much more intimate than the Bund.

The Shanghai government itself highlights Wukang Road, Xintiandi, People’s Square, Nanjing Road, Jing’an Temple and the Bund as places connected conveniently by the metro network.
Still, if your first trip lasts only two nights, I would normally prioritize easier access to the classic sights.
My Choice by Trip Length
For one or two nights, stay around the Bund, East Nanjing Road or People’s Square.
For three to five nights, Jing’an becomes more attractive because you will probably spend more time eating, walking and exploring neighborhoods.
For a longer stay, I would consider the Former French Concession or another well-connected neighborhood rather than staying beside the main tourist sights every day.
Do Not Choose a Hotel Only by the Skyline Photo
Shanghai hotel marketing can be misleading.
A room described as having a “city view” may simply face surrounding towers. A high floor does not automatically mean you will see the Bund.
If the river view matters, look carefully at the building orientation and recent guest photographs.
This is especially important in Jing’an.
Airport and Railway Convenience
If you arrive through Hongqiao Airport or Hongqiao Railway Station, staying near Line 2 is very convenient.
Line 2 passes through Jing’an Temple, People’s Square, East Nanjing Road and Lujiazui and continues toward Pudong Airport.
Shanghai also maintains tourist service centers at Pudong Airport, Hongqiao Airport and Hongqiao Railway Station, which can be helpful when you first arrive.
Ruqin’s Practical Advice
Do not spend too much time looking for the single “best” neighborhood in Shanghai.
For a first visit, I would choose People’s Square for efficiency, Jing’an for a better neighborhood balance, and the Bund for the classic Shanghai experience.
Then choose a hotel within a short walk of a metro station.
That small detail often matters more than another star on the hotel rating.
