Chengdu has two airports, and their names are easy to confuse. However, they serve different flight networks and sit far apart. Choosing the wrong airport can add considerable time and cost to your journey.
The short answer is simple. Chengdu Tianfu International Airport usually handles international flights and many domestic services. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport mainly handles domestic flights and sits much closer to central Chengdu.

Chengdu airport transfer map showing metro and road connections between Tianfu Airport, Shuangliu Airport and the city centre.
Always check the three-letter airport code on every booking:
- TFU: Chengdu Tianfu International Airport
- CTU: Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport
Do not rely only on the word “Chengdu.” Your arrival and departure flights may use different airports.
The Main Difference Between Chengdu’s Two Airports
Tianfu Airport lies southeast of the central city. It is a large, modern aviation hub, but reaching central Chengdu takes time.
Shuangliu Airport stands southwest of central Chengdu. It is the more convenient airport for most city stays, although travelers cannot always choose it.
| Airport | Code | Main role | Best transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tianfu International Airport | TFU | Most international flights and many domestic flights | Metro Line 18 |
| Shuangliu International Airport | CTU | Mainly domestic flights | Metro Line 10 |
| Between the two airports | TFU–CTU | Cross-airport flight connections | Metro Line 19 or road transfer |
Flight arrangements change. Therefore, confirm the airport code directly on the airline’s website or your latest booking record.
Tianfu International Airport: Allow More Travel Time
Tianfu International Airport is in Jianyang, roughly 50 kilometres southeast of central Chengdu. It is much farther from popular areas such as Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li and Kuanzhai Alley than many first-time visitors expect.
Most international visitors arrive here. Many domestic airlines also use Tianfu, so a flight within China does not automatically mean Shuangliu.
Metro Line 18
Metro Line 18 is usually the most reliable way to travel between Tianfu Airport and the urban metro network. The airport station is named Tianfu International Airport Terminal 1 & 2 Station.

Metro Line 18
Line 18 connects the airport with Chengdu South Railway Station and other southern transport hubs. You will normally need another metro line to reach Chunxi Road, Tianfu Square or your hotel.
The Line 18 portion to Chengdu South can take around 35–45 minutes, depending on the service. Allow additional time for walking through the terminal, buying a ticket, waiting and changing lines. A realistic airport-to-hotel journey often takes 60–90 minutes.
High-speed train
Tianfu Airport also has a railway station below the airport complex. Some trains connect Tianfu Airport Station with Chengdu East Railway Station and other cities.
The train itself can be quick. However, departures are less frequent than metro services. You must also pass railway security and use a train tied to a particular departure time.
For most first-time visitors going downtown, the metro is simpler. The train becomes useful when its timetable matches your flight or when Chengdu East Station is your next destination.
Taxi and Didi
A taxi or Didi provides a direct ride to your hotel. This helps after a long flight, particularly when you have children, several suitcases or limited mobility.
The drawback is distance. Depending on your destination and traffic, the ride may take around one to one and a half hours. Check the estimated Didi fare before confirming, or use the official taxi queue.
After leaving baggage claim, follow signs for the designated taxi or ride-hailing pickup area. Avoid accepting unsolicited offers inside the arrivals hall.
Late-night arrivals
Metro schedules do not cover every late arrival. Airport buses may continue later on selected routes, but routes and departure times can change.
If your flight lands near or after the final metro, check the airport’s current ground-transport notice before departure. Otherwise, plan for a taxi, Didi or airport hotel.
Shuangliu International Airport: Closer to the City
Shuangliu Airport sits around 16 kilometres southwest of central Chengdu. For a short city visit, its location is usually more convenient.
Do not assume that all flights at Shuangliu use the same terminal. Check both the airport code and terminal number before leaving your hotel.
Metro Line 10
Metro Line 10 serves Shuangliu Airport. It connects with Chengdu’s wider metro network at stations such as Taipingyuan.
The airport does not sit on a direct downtown line. You will normally transfer to another line for Chunxi Road, Tianfu Square or Kuanzhai Alley.

Metro Line 10
Even with the transfer, the journey is usually manageable. Allow around 45–60 minutes between the airport and a central hotel, including walking and waiting.
Taxi and Didi
Because Shuangliu is closer, taxis and ride-hailing cars become more attractive here. Depending on traffic and your hotel location, a road transfer may take around 30–50 minutes.
A taxi can be particularly sensible for two or three travelers sharing the fare. It also removes the need to carry luggage through a metro interchange.
However, central traffic can be slow during commuting periods. The metro remains more predictable when roads are busy.
How to Transfer Between TFU and CTU
Tianfu and Shuangliu are separate airports, not separate terminals. They are roughly 80 kilometres apart by road, depending on the route.
A cross-airport connection should never be treated like a normal terminal change. You may need to collect luggage, leave the arrivals area, cross the city, check in again and pass security.
Metro Line 19
Metro Line 19 is the main rail connection between the two airports. Some services run directly between Tianfu and Shuangliu, with the fastest scheduled journeys taking about 30 minutes.
However, not every train is a direct express service. Waiting time and stopping patterns can make the journey longer.
At Shuangliu, follow airport signs toward the Line 19 station near Terminal 2. At Tianfu, Line 19 access is through the Ground Transportation Centre. Ask metro staff before boarding if you are unsure whether the next train reaches your airport directly.
For planning, do not count only the train’s advertised running time. Allow time for:
- Walking from baggage claim to the metro
- Finding the correct Line 19 platform
- Waiting for a suitable service
- Walking through the second airport
- Airline check-in and baggage drop
- Security or immigration procedures
With luggage, I would allow at least 90 minutes for the complete ground journey from one arrivals hall to the other departure area. This is not the same as the connection time needed between flights.
Airport bus
Airport Express Bus Line 5 also connects the two airports. It can help when a departure fits your schedule or when you prefer to avoid metro platforms and escalators.
However, buses depend on road conditions. Check the same-day timetable at the airport information counter rather than relying on an old online schedule.
Taxi or Didi
A direct road transfer is the simplest option late at night or with heavy luggage. Depending on traffic, the drive commonly takes around 60–90 minutes.
It will cost much more than the metro. Still, for a family or small group, the convenience may justify the difference.
Save both airport names in Chinese:
- 成都天府国际机场 — Chengdu Tianfu International Airport
- 成都双流国际机场 — Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport
Show the full Chinese name and your terminal to the driver. Saying only “Chengdu airport” is not enough.
How Long Should You Leave Between Flights?
There is no single safe connection time. Airlines, baggage arrangements, immigration status and arrival time all matter.
For a self-transfer between the two airports, I would consider six hours a practical daytime minimum. More time is better when the second flight is international, the tickets are separate or checked luggage must be collected and rechecked.
Allow eight hours or an overnight stay if:
- Your first flight arrives late
- Metro service may have ended
- You have separate tickets
- You must pass immigration
- You are traveling with children or a senior
- You have oversized or several pieces of luggage
- Missing the second flight would be costly
A ten-hour overnight connection may look generous. Yet a late arrival can remove the metro option and leave little useful rest after immigration, luggage collection and the drive.
Before booking, ask both airlines whether they recognize the itinerary as a protected connection. If the tickets are separate, assume you are responsible for reaching the second airport and checking in on time.
What Happens to Checked Luggage?
Do not assume your luggage will move automatically between Tianfu and Shuangliu. On many cross-airport itineraries, passengers must collect their bags and check them in again.
Chengdu’s airports and some airlines offer additional inter-airport transfer assistance. A free luggage-transfer service was introduced on selected itineraries in 2026. However, eligibility depends on the airline, flight combination, timing and current service rules.
Contact the operating airline before departure. Ask these exact questions:
- Must I collect my checked bag at the first airport?
- Can my bag be transferred between CTU and TFU?
- Where is the cross-airport transfer counter?
- What is the final baggage-drop time for my next flight?
If you cannot receive clear confirmation, plan to handle the luggage yourself.
Visa and Immigration Considerations
A cross-airport transfer normally requires you to enter mainland China because you must leave one airport and travel overland to the other. Remaining in an international transit area is not possible.
Some nationalities and itineraries qualify for China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy. Both Chengdu airports are eligible ports under the current policy. However, eligibility depends on nationality, passport, onward ticket and travel route to a third country or region.
The 24-hour transit rule does not automatically give every traveler permission to leave the airport. When temporary entry is required, immigration officers decide whether to grant it.
Check your eligibility with China’s National Immigration Administration or a Chinese embassy before buying a self-transfer itinerary. Do not rely only on an airline booking page, online forum or travel agent.
Which Chengdu Airport Is Better?
If two otherwise similar domestic flights are available, Shuangliu is usually better for a short city stay. It saves time and makes taxis more affordable.
Tianfu may work better when:
- It offers the only suitable international flight
- The fare or schedule is clearly better
- Your hotel lies in southern Chengdu
- You are continuing by train from Tianfu Airport Station
- You have enough time for the longer city transfer
Never choose an airport only because the airfare is slightly lower. Add the cost and time of reaching it before comparing the real value.
Ruqin’s Practical Advice
First, memorize the codes: TFU is Tianfu; CTU is Shuangliu. Then check the code again before booking transport and before leaving your hotel.
For a normal visit, use Metro Line 18 at Tianfu and Line 10 at Shuangliu. For an airport change, look first at Line 19, but leave a generous buffer. If the transfer happens late at night, involves separate tickets or includes several suitcases, a taxi, Didi or overnight stay may be the calmer choice.
