A Pearl River night cruise is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to experience Guangzhou after dark.
While Guangzhou feels busy and fast-moving during the day, the city takes on a very different atmosphere in the evening. Along the river, the skyline lights up, bridges glow across the water, and landmarks such as Canton Tower become the focal point of the city skyline.
For first-time visitors, I usually recommend the Pearl River cruise as a relaxed evening activity—especially after a full day of sightseeing. It doesn’t require much walking, the views are open and constantly changing, and it offers a different perspective of Guangzhou from the water.
The cruise passes through the central section of the Pearl River, with views of illuminated bridges, historic riverside buildings, modern towers, and some of Guangzhou’s best-known skyline landmarks.
If you’ve spent the day exploring old Guangzhou, a river cruise in the evening feels like a natural way to end the day.

Early Evening – Dinner Before the Cruise
Recommended time: 5:30 pm–6:30 pm
I usually suggest having dinner before boarding.
The areas near the Pearl River offer plenty of good dining options, whether you’re looking for Cantonese dim sum, seafood, or something lighter before the cruise.
An early dinner works especially well because the cruise itself is more about scenery than dining.
Evening – Pearl River Night Cruise
Suggested boarding: around 7:00 pm
Head to the pier in the early evening for boarding.
One of the most popular departure points is Dashatou Wharf, though exact piers can vary depending on the cruise operator.
Once on board, the cruise typically lasts around 60–70 minutes.
As the boat moves along the river, you’ll pass some of Guangzhou’s most recognisable landmarks, including:
- Canton Tower
- Ersha Island
- Guangzhou International Finance Centre
- illuminated Pearl River bridges
- riverside historic architecture and newer skyline developments
The highlight for many visitors is seeing Canton Tower reflected in the river while the skyline lights up around it.
After the Cruise – Riverside Walk or Return to Hotel
After disembarking, you can either return directly to your hotel or spend a little more time by the river.
If the weather is comfortable, a short riverside walk afterward can be a nice way to slow down before the evening ends.

Best Time to Go
The best time is shortly after sunset, when the city lights are fully visible but there’s still some colour left in the sky.
Where to Sit
If open-air upper deck seating is available, I usually recommend it for the best skyline views and photography.
Bring an extra layer in cooler months as it can feel breezy on the river.
How Long to Allow
Plan around 2–3 hours total, including:
- getting to the pier
- boarding time
- the cruise itself
- returning afterward

What I like about the Pearl River cruise is that it slows Guangzhou down.
During the day, the city feels busy and energetic. From the river at night, it feels more open, reflective, and surprisingly calm.
It’s not about checking off attractions—it’s simply about seeing Guangzhou from a different angle.
And for many visitors, that ends up being one of the most memorable views of the city.
