Tour Introduction
If you’d like to spend a day beyond Chengdu and see a different side of Sichuan, this is one of the most rewarding day trips I usually recommend.
This private journey takes you west of the city to two of Sichuan’s most remarkable UNESCO World Heritage sites—Mount Qingcheng and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. Together they offer a beautiful contrast: one peaceful and spiritual, hidden among forested mountain paths; the other an extraordinary piece of ancient engineering that still shapes daily life today.
At Mount Qingcheng, you’ll walk through shaded trails, Taoist temples, and hillside pavilions surrounded by greenery. Known as the birthplace of Taoism in China, the mountain feels calm, atmospheric, and far removed from the city.
Later, continue to Dujiangyan, where your guide will explain how this 2,000-year-old irrigation system continues to manage the Min River without the use of a dam—an engineering achievement that still feels impressive even now.
With private transport, included lunch, and everything arranged for you, the day feels smooth and relaxed, leaving you free to simply enjoy the scenery and the experience at your own pace.

Your Day Trip Itinerary
Mount Qingcheng
Your day begins with morning pickup from your Chengdu hotel, followed by a comfortable private drive of around 1.5 hours դեպի Mount Qingcheng.
Leaving early usually makes the experience much more enjoyable. The roads are quieter, and the mountain feels especially peaceful in the morning.

Mount Qingcheng is considered the birthplace of Taoism and has been an important spiritual retreat for centuries. Covered in dense forest, the mountain is known for its misty paths, ancient temples, wooden pavilions, and fresh mountain air.
After arriving, you’ll take the eco shuttle to the scenic area entrance, followed by the cable car up the mountain, which makes the visit easier while still allowing plenty of time to walk and explore.
Your guide will lead you through the temple complex, explaining Taoist traditions, mountain history, and the significance of the architecture along the way.
What I like most here is the atmosphere—it feels quiet, green, and unhurried, especially compared with the city.
Suggested visit: around 3 hours
Local Sichuan Lunch
After descending from the mountain, you’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant nearby.
This is a nice moment to rest and enjoy regional Sichuan dishes before continuing to Dujiangyan. Your guide can help recommend dishes depending on your preferences and spice level.
Dujiangyan Irrigation System
In the afternoon, continue to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, one of the oldest functioning water management systems in the world.
Built over 2,000 years ago during the Qin Dynasty, it was designed to control the Min River and prevent flooding while supplying water to the Chengdu Plain—without ever blocking the river completely.

Walking through the site, your guide will explain how the system works and why it remains one of China’s greatest engineering achievements.
You’ll visit scenic viewpoints such as Qinyan Pavilion, where you can look out over the waterways and surrounding mountains, before continuing to Erwang Temple, built in memory of Li Bing and his son, the designers behind the project.
Even if engineering isn’t usually your thing, the setting itself is beautiful, and the story behind it makes the visit especially memorable.
Suggested visit: around 2 hours
After the visit, you’ll return to your private vehicle and drive back to Chengdu, with drop-off at your hotel in the early evening.
This route works particularly well if you’d like to combine nature, culture, and history in one easy day outside the city—without needing to plan transport on your own.
