The Dazu Rock Carvings are possible as a day trip from central Chongqing, but the journey requires more planning than a visit to an urban attraction. The carvings lie across several sites in Dazu District, and the main Baodingshan Scenic Area (宝顶山景区) is outside Dazu’s urban centre.
For most first-time visitors, I recommend concentrating on Baodingshan. Use a direct excursion bus or private car if convenience matters. Public transport costs less, but it involves additional transfers and leaves less time at the carvings.
One detail is particularly important: all independent visitors to Baodingshan must now begin at the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Centre (大足石刻游客中心). Do not ask a driver to take you directly to the cliff carvings.
1. Why Visit the Dazu Rock Carvings?
The Dazu Rock Carvings (大足石刻) are not one temple, cave or cliff. The name covers a large collection of religious carvings spread across Dazu District, including around 50,000 statues and more than 100,000 Chinese characters in inscriptions.
Work began during the early Tang dynasty and continued through the late Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Ming and Qing periods. The main artistic development took place between the ninth and thirteenth centuries. This later date distinguishes Dazu from earlier Chinese cave complexes such as Dunhuang, Yungang and Longmen.
The carvings bring Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism together. They also show ordinary life, moral lessons, family relationships and local beliefs. This human detail makes Dazu easier to understand than visitors may expect from a religious heritage site.
UNESCO added the Dazu Rock Carvings to the World Heritage List in December 1999. They remain Chongqing’s only World Cultural Heritage Site and are regarded as one of the final major achievements in the history of traditional Chinese cave art.
The protected heritage property centres on five main groups:
- Baodingshan (宝顶山)
- Beishan (北山)
- Nanshan (南山)
- Shimenshan (石门山)
- Shizhuanshan (石篆山)
These sites are not located inside one compact park. They lie in different parts of Dazu District, so visiting all five in one day is neither practical nor necessary.
2. Where the Five Main Rock Carving Groups Are Located
Dazu is a district administered by Chongqing Municipality. Dazu’s urban centre (大足城区) lies about 55 kilometres west of central Chongqing, but the five principal carving groups are spread across the surrounding countryside.

Dazu Rock Carvings Five Main Sites Map
It is important to understand that these sites do not form one continuous attraction. Only visitors going to Baodingshan need to begin at the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Centre (大足石刻游客中心). The other four sites have their own entrances and can be reached independently.
1) Baodingshan Rock Carvings
Baoding Township (宝顶镇) lies approximately seven kilometres northeast of Dazu’s urban centre. The official visitor centre is located within the township.
The Baodingshan Rock Carvings (宝顶山石刻) are about four kilometres east of the visitor centre and approximately 12 kilometres northeast of Dazu’s urban centre. Visitors must complete the ticket and identity checks at the visitor centre before taking the scenic-area shuttle to the carvings.
Baodingshan is the main Dazu site and the only carving group directly connected to the visitor centre’s shuttle system.
Baodingshan: The Best Choice for a First Visit
If you have only one day, concentrate on Baodingshan. It contains the largest and most coherent group of carvings, as well as the visitor centre, museum and the best-developed sightseeing facilities.
The complex was created under the direction of the Southern Song monk Zhao Zhifeng (赵智凤) over approximately 70 years. Large connected tableaux line the U-shaped cliffs of Dafowan. Important works include the Thousand-Armed Guanyin, the reclining Buddha and the Huayan Three Saints.
Baodingshan is particularly valuable because its carvings form a carefully planned religious complex rather than a loose collection of separate niches. They combine Buddhist teachings with scenes of farming, family responsibilities and everyday conduct.
Allow three to four hours from your arrival at the visitor centre. This should cover identity and ticket checks, shuttle transport, the main carving route and the Dazu Rock Carvings Museum.
2) Beishan Rock Carvings
Beishan (北山石刻) lies about two kilometres north of Dazu’s urban centre. It is approximately 10 kilometres, or around 20 minutes by car, from the Baodingshan visitor centre.
Beishan has its own entrance. You do not need to pass through the main visitor centre before visiting it.
Its convenient location makes Beishan the easiest second site to combine with Baodingshan, particularly if you have a private car or driver.
Beishan: Best for Detailed Sculpture
Beishan lies about 2 kilometres north of Dazu’s urban centre. Its niches are smaller and more densely arranged than the monumental compositions at Baodingshan.
The site is particularly known for its refined Guanyin figures and delicate carving. It also provides a clear visual record of how local cave art developed from the late Tang dynasty through the Five Dynasties and into the Song period.
Beishan is the most sensible second site to add. However, include it only if you leave Chongqing early and have a private car, driver or dependable local transport. Combining Baodingshan and Beishan by public buses can make the day feel rushed.
3) Nanshan Rock Carvings
Nanshan (南山石刻) is approximately two kilometres south of Dazu’s urban centre. It is known mainly for its Song-dynasty Taoist carvings, including the unusual central-pillar cave at Sanqing Cave.
Visitors can travel directly to Nanshan. The Baodingshan visitor centre is not involved in admission or transport to this site.
Nanshan is much smaller and focuses mainly on Taoist subjects from the Song dynasty. Its carvings preserve an unusually complete group of Taoist deities and valuable evidence of historical religious practice.
Choose Nanshan if you have a particular interest in Taoism or are staying overnight in Dazu. It is not essential for a standard first-time day trip.
Shimenshan Rock Carvings
Shimenshan (石门山石刻) lies approximately 20 kilometres southeast of Dazu’s urban centre. Its more remote location makes it less convenient to combine with Baodingshan on a normal day trip.
The site is especially interesting for its mixture of Buddhist and Taoist subjects. It suits travelers with a deeper interest in Chinese religious sculpture and access to private transport.
Shimenshan combines Buddhist and Taoist figures within the same group of carvings. Its subjects are varied, and several works are noted for their expressive detail.
The site formally reopened to visitors in 2024. It remains less convenient to reach than Baodingshan or Beishan, so check its current opening status and transport before making a special journey.
Shizhuanshan Rock Carvings
Shizhuanshan (石篆山石刻) is located at Fohui Village in Sanqu Township, approximately 25 kilometres southwest of Dazu’s urban centre. It is the most distant of the five principal sites.
The carvings are known for presenting Confucian, Buddhist and Taoist subjects within the same complex. Because of the distance and limited transport, Shizhuanshan is better suited to an overnight stay or a specialist driving route.
Shizhuanshan is one of China’s earliest surviving carving groups to present Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism together in a planned arrangement.
It is particularly valuable for understanding religious life and popular beliefs during the Northern Song dynasty. However, its more remote location makes it better for a specialist heritage trip than a first visit from Chongqing.
The Most Realistic Choice
For most international visitors, Baodingshan alone is enough for a rewarding day trip. Add Beishan if you have private transport and still have time and energy after the main site.
Do not try to collect all five mountains in one day. The distances between them would leave too little time to examine the carvings properly.
The official schedule currently lists the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Centre as opening at 8:30 a.m., with ticket sales ending at 4:00 p.m. and the final visitor-centre check at 4:10 p.m. Baodingshan itself opens at 9:00 a.m., stops admitting visitors at 4:30 p.m. and closes at 6:00 p.m. Check the official notice again before traveling, especially during public holidays
Transport Options from Chongqing
3. Transport Options from Chongqing
There are three practical ways to reach the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Centre (大足石刻游客中心) from central Chongqing. For most first-time visitors, the direct scenic-area bus is the simplest option because it avoids railway stations and local transfers.
| Transport | Approximate journey | Typical cost | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct scenic bus | About 2 hours | ¥48 one way; around ¥88–96 return | Solo travelers and couples | Fixed departure and return times |
| High-speed train and local transfer | 31–60 minutes by train, plus 20–120 minutes onward | Train ¥30–50, plus local transport | Travelers staying near Chongqing West or Shapingba | Dazu South is not close to Baodingshan |
| Self-driving | About 1½–2 hours | Fuel, tolls and parking | Families, small groups and visitors adding Beishan | Requires driving and navigation |
Option 1: Take the Direct Scenic Bus
The Dazu Rock Carvings direct bus is the easiest public-transport option. It travels from central Chongqing to the official visitor centre without requiring a transfer in Dazu.

Direct Scenic Bus from Central Chongqing to Dazu Rock Carving Visitor Center
The usual schedule is:
- 8:00 a.m. — Depart from the Chongqing Bombing Massacre Site near Jiefangbei
重庆大轰炸惨案遗址 - 8:30 a.m. — Additional pickup at Hongqihegou Bus Station
红旗河沟汽车站 - Late afternoon — Return from the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Centre
- Final stop in Chongqing — Near Jiaochangkou and Jiefangbei
The journey normally takes about two hours each way. A one-way ticket is usually around ¥48. Return tickets and packages including admission are also available.
Published 2026 listings do not always show the same return fare or departure time. Some list a return fare of ¥88, while others show ¥96; return departures have also been advertised at either 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. Treat these figures as a guide and follow the details shown on your booking confirmation.
Tickets can normally be reserved through:
- 大美重庆 WeChat account
- 重庆景区直通车服务号 WeChat service account
Book at least one day ahead when possible. The operator usually sends a message containing the pickup details and vehicle registration number before departure.
The fixed return time is the main limitation. Confirm that the schedule leaves enough time for the carvings, museum, shuttle transfers and lunch. If you intend to add Beishan, a fixed direct bus may not provide enough flexibility.
Option 2: Take the High-Speed Train to Dazu South
High-speed trains run from Chongqing West Railway Station (重庆西站) and some services depart from Shapingba Railway Station (沙坪坝站) for Dazu South Railway Station (大足南站).
The railway journey usually takes around 31–60 minutes. Second-class fares are generally between ¥30 and ¥50, depending on the train and departure station.
However, Dazu South is not near Baodingshan. You still need to travel from the station to the official visitor centre.
By Taxi or DiDi
A taxi or ride-hailing car is the more convenient onward connection. Depending on traffic, pickup conditions and the quoted route, allow approximately 20–50 minutes and ¥25–70.
Show the driver:
大足石刻游客中心(宝顶山景区唯一入口)
Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Centre — the sole entrance for Baodingshan
Do not select only “Dazu Rock Carvings” in the app. Several carving sites share that general name.
By Local Bus
The cheaper route involves taking Bus 204 toward Dazu’s urban area and transferring to Bus 205 for the visitor centre. The complete local journey may take close to two hours and costs approximately ¥9.
The officially published directions also mention Bus 206 and the local stone-carvings tourist service as possible connections. Routes and transfer stops can change, so confirm them with station staff before boarding.
Although the train journey is fast, the local transfer reduces its overall advantage. This option works best if you are staying near Chongqing West or Shapingba and can coordinate the train and onward taxi efficiently.
Check the return train before leaving Chongqing. Allow extra time at Dazu South for security checks and finding the correct platform.
Option 3: Drive or Hire a Private Car
Driving provides the most flexible day trip. Navigate to:
大足石刻游客中心
Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Centre
From central Chongqing, the journey via the Chongqing–Chengdu Expressway (渝蓉高速) normally takes about 1½–2 hours. Travel time can increase during weekends, public holidays and urban rush hours.
Fuel and toll costs depend on your starting point and vehicle. A basic one-way estimate is around ¥43, while parking at the visitor centre generally costs approximately ¥6–10 per day. Confirm the posted parking charge on arrival.
A car is especially useful if you want to combine Baodingshan with Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻). The drive between the two areas usually takes around 15–20 minutes, although the exact time depends on the entrance and traffic.
Travelers who do not wish to drive can hire a private car with a driver. Agree on the total price, tolls, parking charges, waiting time and return arrangement before departure.
For one or two travelers visiting only Baodingshan, the direct scenic bus usually offers better value. For a family, a small group, senior travelers or anyone adding Beishan, a private vehicle provides a more comfortable and flexible day.
Current listings confirm the Jiefangbei and Hongqihegou pickup points, while the official Dazu guide confirms the train-and-bus connections. Because commercial bus prices and return times vary between listings, travelers should rely on the final booking message rather than an older online timetable.
4. Begin at the Official Visitor Centre
Since November 1, 2025, the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Centre has served as the sole public entry and transport hub for Baodingshan.
Visitors must complete identity and ticket checks there. The carvings are approximately 4 kilometres from the centre, and the official route uses scenic-area buses and sightseeing vehicles.
Do not attempt to save money by walking from the visitor centre toward the carvings. Access controls and the one-way visitor route may prevent you from continuing, forcing you to return to the shuttle boarding point.
At the end of the visit, follow signs toward the designated return shuttle. The drop-off and return boarding points may not be identical.
5. Tickets and Opening Hours
The official published prices are:
| Ticket | March–November | December–February |
|---|---|---|
| Baodingshan admission | ¥115 | ¥100 |
| Baodingshan and Beishan combined ticket | ¥140 | ¥120 |
| Baodingshan shuttle, return | ¥22 | ¥22 |
| Digital films | ¥80 | ¥80 |
| Baodingshan admission and return shuttle package | ¥130 | ¥115 |
Discount eligibility applies only to the admission portion in many cases. Scenic transport and digital films may still require payment.
The official schedule currently lists:
- Visitor centre: 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
- Ticket sales: 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
- Final visitor-centre ticket check: 4:10 p.m.
- Baodingshan: 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
- Final entry to Baodingshan: 4:30 p.m.
- Dazu Rock Carvings Museum: 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Holiday hours and temporary arrangements can differ. Check the official Dazu Rock Carvings account before leaving Chongqing.
Carry your physical passport. If the online booking system does not accept your document, contact the attraction or allow time to use the staffed ticket counter.
6. A Realistic Day-Trip Schedule
Baodingshan works best as a one-way circuit rather than a series of separate stops. The walking route covers roughly 3 kilometres and normally takes three to four hours, including the museum, the main carvings, Shengshou Temple and short rests.

Baodingshan Rock Carvings Walking Route Map
7:00–8:00 a.m.: Leave Central Chongqing
Start early, especially if you are using the direct excursion bus or public transport. Chongqing traffic, railway security and local transfers can all add time.
If your return bus leaves the visitor centre at a fixed time, save its departure details before entering the scenic area.
9:30–10:30 a.m.: Arrive at the Visitor Centre
Begin at the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Centre (大足石刻游客中心). Complete the ticket and identity checks, use the toilets and buy water before continuing.
The digital cinema provides a short introduction to the history and religious themes of the carvings. It can be helpful for first-time visitors, but check the next screening time before waiting. The original carvings should remain your priority.
Afterward, take the scenic-area shuttle to the Baodingshan drop-off point. Do not attempt to walk the full distance from the visitor centre.
10:30–11:30 a.m.: Visit the Dazu Rock Carvings Museum
The Dazu Rock Carvings Museum (大足石刻博物馆) is about a two-minute walk from the shuttle stop. Visiting it before the carvings gives you useful context for the Buddhist stories, inscriptions and conservation work you will see later.

Visit Dazu Rock Carvings Museum
Allow around one hour if you enjoy history and religious art. A shorter visit of 30–40 minutes is possible if you have a fixed return bus.
11:30 a.m.–12:45 p.m.: Explore the Dafowan Carvings
From the museum exit, walk for about five minutes to Dafowan (大佛湾). This U-shaped cliff is the central section of Baodingshan and contains its best-known sculptural groups.

Explore the Dafowan Carvings
Follow the designated path clockwise along approximately 500 metres of carved cliff. The Thousand-Armed Guanyin, the reclining Buddha and the large narrative scenes deserve time. Avoid treating this section as a quick photo stop.
The path is generally manageable, but stone surfaces may become slippery in rain. Some passages and viewing areas can also feel congested when tour groups arrive.
12:45–1:15 p.m.: Continue to Shengshou Temple
From the Dafowan exit, follow the steps uphill for roughly three minutes to Shengshou Temple (圣寿寺).
This historic temple provides a quieter change of pace after the busy carving galleries. The climb is short, although the steps may be tiring for visitors with limited mobility.
1:15–1:35 p.m.: Visit Xiaofowan
Leave through the side of the temple and walk for about two minutes to Xiaofowan (小佛湾). This smaller site formed part of the esoteric Buddhist complex associated with Zhao Zhifeng, who directed the development of Baodingshan.
Xiaofowan usually receives fewer visitors than Dafowan. Access to individual areas can change for conservation or maintenance, so follow the signs and staff instructions on the day.
1:35–2:30 p.m.: Walk to Baoding Old Street
Continue along the marked path for approximately ten minutes to Baoding Old Street (宝顶老街). This completes the walking circuit without requiring you to retrace the route through the carvings.

Baoding Old Street (宝顶老街)
The old street has local snacks, simple restaurants and souvenir shops. It is the most convenient place to rest or have a late lunch before returning to the visitor centre.
2:30–3:00 p.m.: Take the Shuttle Back
Board the official scenic-area shuttle at Baoding Old Street for the return to the visitor centre. Although the straight-line distance is about 3 kilometres, the road journey is closer to 4 kilometres.
There is little benefit in walking this final section. Save your energy for the journey back to Chongqing or a possible visit to Beishan.
After 3:00 p.m.: Return to Chongqing or Add Beishan
Travelers using a fixed excursion bus should return directly to the visitor centre and arrive well before the stated departure time.
If you have a private vehicle, enough daylight and a confirmed closing time, you may continue to Beishan Rock Carvings. Otherwise, return to Chongqing. Trying to add Beishan after a rushed visit to Baodingshan usually weakens both experiences.
The exact timings are flexible. Allow more time for the museum if you enjoy history, or spend it beside the Dafowan carvings if the original sculpture is your main interest. The important point is to follow the one-way route and use the shuttle for both the outward and return journeys.
The generated map is schematic rather than geographically scaled, and clearly separates the red walking circuit from the blue shuttle journeys.
7. Walking, Weather and Accessibility
Wear shoes with reliable grip. The route contains stone paving, outdoor steps, damp surfaces and elevation changes.
In summer, the gorge can feel hot and humid. Carry water and sun protection, although parts of the route remain shaded. In winter, the stone paths may feel cold and damp.
Travelers with limited mobility should ask the attraction about the current accessible route before booking. Scenic buses reduce the approach distance, but they do not remove every step or slope around the carvings.
Avoid carrying a large suitcase. Store luggage at your Chongqing hotel or confirm facilities at your transport terminal before departure.
Ruqin’s Practical Advice
For a first visit, spend the day at Baodingshan and add the museum. This gives the carvings enough time without turning the outing into a race between distant sites.
Choose an excursion bus if you want an economical direct transfer. Hire a private car if you are traveling with seniors, have limited mobility or want to add Beishan. Use public coaches or trains only when you are comfortable making local connections in Chinese.
Most importantly, travel to the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Centre, not directly to the cliff carvings. Buy the shuttle-inclusive package, start early and keep your return journey flexible.
