Wulong Karst Day Trip from Chongqing: Train, Tickets and Route

Written and updated by Ruqin
October 18, 2026

Wulong Karst is one of the most practical nature trips from central Chongqing. The opening of the high-speed railway between Chongqing East and Wulong South has made the journey much shorter than older guides suggest.

A day trip is realistic if you leave early, focus on the Three Natural Bridges, and reserve your return train in advance. Adding Longshuixia Fissure Gorge is possible for fit travelers, but including Fairy Mountain or Furong Cave usually makes the day too rushed.

Take the Train from Chongqing East (Chongqingdong)

Most travelers should depart from Chongqing East Railway Station (重庆东站). It offers the fastest and most frequent high-speed services to Wulong South Railway Station (武隆南站).

Some trains also leave from Chongqing North Railway Station (重庆北站). However, these journeys usually take longer. Before booking, compare the departure station, arrival station, journey time, and onward connection to the Wulong scenic area.

How the Station Names Appear on 12306

When booking through 12306.cn, the English station names normally appear as:

  • Chongqingdong — Chongqing East Railway Station (重庆东站)
  • Chongqingbei — Chongqing North Railway Station (重庆北站)
  • Wulongnan — Wulong South Railway Station (武隆南站)
  • Wulong — the older Wulong Railway Station (武隆站)

Wulong South and Wulong are separate stations. For the fastest journey, select Wulongnan as your destination.

Sample Morning and Midday Trains

The following timetable gives travelers a general idea of the available departure times. It also shows that the earliest practical high-speed train normally leaves Chongqing East shortly after 7:00 a.m.

G2431 appears twice because it first departs from Chongqing North, calls at Chongqing East, and then continues to Wulong South. Boarding the same train at Chongqing East produces a much shorter journey.

These times and fares are for planning reference only. Railway schedules, discounts, seat availability, and prices can change. Check the current timetable on 12306.cn before booking.

For a Wulong day trip, the 07:17 G2425 service from Chongqing East is the most useful example. It reaches Wulong South shortly after 8:00 a.m., leaving enough time for the road transfer and a reasonably relaxed visit. A train arriving after midday is less suitable unless you plan to stay overnight.

How to Reach Chongqing East Railway Station

Chongqing East is in Nan’an District. The Line 6 eastern branch connects the railway station with Liujiaping Station, where passengers transfer to or from the main Line 6 service.

Check the direction and platform display carefully. Not every Line 6 train runs directly to Chongqing East.

For an early departure, a taxi or DiDi may be more convenient, especially if you are carrying luggage or staying around Jiefangbei. Show the driver:

Chongqing East Railway Station’s departure hall

重庆东站
Chongqing East Railway Station

Aim to reach the station 45–60 minutes before departure. Allow time for the passport check, security screening, and walk to the correct boarding gate.

How to Reach Chongqing North Railway Station

Chongqing North has two metro stations serving different sides of the railway complex:

  • Chongqing North Station North Square (重庆北站北广场): Metro Lines 4 and 10
  • Chongqing North Station South Square (重庆北站南广场): Metro Lines 3 and 10, plus the Loop Line

The two squares belong to the same railway station and are connected within the complex. Use the metro station recommended by your live navigation route, then follow the railway signs after arrival.

If taking a taxi, show the driver 重庆北站 and confirm whether your navigation route directs you to the north or south square. Allow extra time because the station is large and the walk from the metro to the waiting area can be longer than expected.

From Wulong South to the Scenic Area

After leaving Wulong South Railway Station (武隆南站), the most practical option is the direct tourist bus to the Xiannüshan Resort Tourist Centre (仙女山度假区游客中心). This avoids complicated local transfers and takes you to Wulong’s main sightseeing transport hub.

Wulong South Railway Station Direct tourist bus to the Xiannüshan Resort Tourist Centre (仙女山度假区游客中心)

Wulong South Railway Station Direct tourist bus to the Xiannüshan Resort Tourist Centre (仙女山度假区游客中心)

Take the “Xiannüshan Star” Tourist Bus

Look for signs for the 仙女山“星”旅游专线 after leaving the railway station. If the boarding point is unclear, show this name to a member of staff.

The service normally operates as follows:

  • Destination: Xiannüshan Resort Tourist Centre
  • Fare: About ¥16 each way ( pay on the spot )
  • Journey time: Approximately 50–60 minutes
  • Typical operating hours: Around 7:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
  • Frequency: About every 15 minutes during busy periods and every 30 minutes at quieter times

The timetable may be coordinated with arriving trains. However, departure times, fares, and the final evening service can change. Confirm the return service when you arrive rather than waiting until the end of the day.

Change at the Tourist Centre

The Xiannüshan Tourist Reception Centre, wulong

The Xiannüshan Tourist Reception Centre

The Xiannüshan Resort Tourist Centre is the main transfer point for Wulong’s mountain attractions. From here, follow the signs for the official scenic-area transport serving places such as:

  • Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥)
  • Longshuixia Fissure Gorge (龙水峡地缝)
  • Fairy Mountain National Forest Park (仙女山国家森林公园)
  • Other Wulong attractions and connecting services

For the Three Natural Bridges and Longshuixia Fissure Gorge, go to the B2 level of the tourist centre and follow the signs for the appropriate scenic shuttle. A local transfer may cost about ¥8, although some attraction tickets already include scenic transport. Check the ticket details before paying again.

For Fairy Mountain National Forest Park, follow the signs for its separate shuttle or tourist service. Do not join a queue simply because it is marked “scenic bus.” Several attractions use the same transport hub.

Furong Cave lies farther away, near Jiangkou Town. If you plan to visit it, confirm the current connection and last return service at the information desk. It is not a practical addition to a short Three Natural Bridges day trip.

Taxi or Ride-Hailing

A taxi or ride-hailing car is useful when several people are traveling together, you are short of time, or you want to avoid waiting for the tourist bus.

The road journey normally takes around 40–50 minutes. As a general reference:

  • An app-based ride may cost around ¥90.
  • A regular taxi may cost around ¥160.

Traffic, demand, pickup location, and the final destination can change the price. Confirm the estimated fare in the app or with the driver before leaving.

Show the driver:

仙女山度假区游客中心
Xiannüshan Resort Tourist Centre

Do not show only 仙女山, as this may be understood as Fairy Mountain National Forest Park rather than the visitor centre used for the Three Natural Bridges.

Driving Yourself

The road distance is approximately 30 kilometres, and the journey usually takes about 50 minutes. Use 仙女山度假区游客中心 as the destination if you plan to visit the Three Natural Bridges or Longshuixia Fissure Gorge.

Parts of Wuxian Road (武仙路) may be affected by roadworks. Add at least 15 minutes to the estimated driving time and follow current navigation rather than depending on an older route.

For most first-time visitors, the Xiannüshan Star tourist bus is the simplest choice. It is inexpensive, direct, and delivers you to the correct transport hub. A taxi saves some time, but the scenic-area shuttle is still required for parts of the final journey.

Which Wulong Attraction Should You Choose?

Wulong is not one compact park. The main attractions lie in different areas and require separate tickets and transport.

For a first visit, choose the Three Natural Bridges. It provides the clearest introduction to Wulong’s landscape without forcing you to spend the day moving among distant sites.

Visiting the Three Natural Bridges

The Three Natural Bridges form part of the UNESCO-listed South China Karst. The walking route passes beneath three limestone arches:

Visiting the Three Natural Bridges

Visiting the Three Natural Bridges

  • Tianlong Bridge 天龙桥
  • Qinglong Bridge 青龙桥
  • Heilong Bridge 黑龙桥

The attraction also includes the reconstructed Tianfu Official Post Station, a traditional courtyard complex on the valley floor. It is the building many visitors recognize from films and promotional photographs.

The route generally descends into the valley before continuing beneath the bridges and through the narrow karst landscape. Although much of the path follows a prepared walkway, it still involves steps, slopes, damp surfaces, and sustained walking.

Allow roughly 2½–3½ hours. Photography, crowds, rain, and rest breaks can extend the visit.

Ticket Prices and What They Include

For most adult visitors, the practical Three Natural Bridges ticket costs about ¥155. This is usually a package rather than admission alone. It commonly includes:

  • Three Natural Bridges admission
  • The scenic-area transfer bus
  • The sightseeing lift into the valley

The final price depends on the season, booking platform, and exact combination of services. Before paying, open the product details and confirm that both 中转车 (transfer bus) and 观光电梯 (sightseeing lift) are included.

Why Some Prices Look Much Lower

The official basic admission price is normally:

  • Peak season: ¥70
  • Low season: ¥40

However, this is the entrance fee only. It may not include the transfer bus, sightseeing lift, insurance, or other internal transport.

Some platforms advertise prices from approximately ¥125. These offers may use the low-season rate, exclude the lift, apply only to eligible visitors, or require the purchase of another service. Compare what is included rather than choosing the lowest number shown on the search page.

For a straightforward first visit, the single-attraction package including admission, transfer bus, and lift is usually the safest choice.

Combined Tickets for Several Attractions

Combined tickets may offer better value if you genuinely have time to visit more than one attraction. Reference prices include:

Ticket combinationApproximate starting price
Three Natural Bridges, including bus and lift¥155
Three Natural Bridges + Fairy Mountain¥310
Three Natural Bridges + Fairy Mountain + Longshuixia Fissure Gorge¥299

These figures may appear inconsistent because platforms apply different seasonal rates, promotions, and package conditions. A three-attraction offer can occasionally cost less than a two-attraction package during a promotion.

Do not buy a larger package simply because the discount looks attractive. The attractions are spread across Wulong, and using every admission in one day may be unrealistic. For a day trip from Chongqing, a Three Natural Bridges ticket is enough for most visitors. Fit travelers with an early arrival can consider adding Longshuixia Fissure Gorge.

Where to Buy Tickets

Tickets are available through the official 武隆喀斯特旅游景区 WeChat mini-program and major Chinese platforms such as Trip.com, Qunar, Meituan, and Ctrip.

Online prices may be slightly lower than the walk-up price, but cancellation rules vary. Some products allow cancellation before entry, while others become non-refundable after confirmation, ticket issuance, or the reservation deadline.

Before completing the purchase, check:

  • The visit date and entry period
  • Whether a foreign passport is accepted
  • Whether the transfer bus is included
  • Whether the sightseeing lift is included
  • Which attractions the package covers
  • The cancellation and refund deadline
  • Whether ticket collection or passport verification is required

Carry the physical passport used for booking.

Check the Latest Entry Time

The Three Natural Bridges generally admits visitors from around 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. During busier or longer-day periods, the last-entry time may be extended to approximately 5:00 p.m.

Hours can change with the season, weather, maintenance, and holiday crowd controls. Confirm the same-day schedule before leaving Chongqing, especially if your train reaches Wulong South around midday.

Should You Add Longshuixia Fissure Gorge?

Longshuixia Fissure Gorge (龙水峡地缝) offers a different experience from the Three Natural Bridges. Its route follows a narrow gorge with cliffs, streams, waterfalls, caves, steps, and damp walkways.

Visiting Longshuixia Fissure Gorge

Visiting Longshuixia Fissure Gorge

The two attractions are often visited together because scenic transport connects them through the main tourist-centre system. However, combining them creates a much longer and more physically demanding day.

Tickets and Additional Costs

The standard adult package for Longshuixia Fissure Gorge costs approximately:

  • Peak season: ¥105
  • Low season, generally November to February: ¥85

The package normally includes:

  • Admission to Longshuixia Fissure Gorge
  • Scenic transfer-bus transport
  • The sightseeing lift

Some booking channels show an admission-only ticket for around ¥55. However, the required transfer bus may cost approximately ¥35 separately. Check the final total before deciding that an admission-only ticket is cheaper.

Visitors aged 65 or over may qualify for free basic admission. However, they usually still need to pay for the scenic bus, lift, and other compulsory transport. Carry the original passport and select the correct concession ticket when booking.

Prices, eligibility rules, and package contents can change. Check the official 武隆喀斯特旅游景区 WeChat account before departure and complete any required real-name reservation.

Is There Enough Time for Both Attractions?

Adding Longshuixia is realistic if:

  • You take an early train from Chongqing East.
  • You reach the tourist centre before late morning.
  • You have already booked both attractions.
  • You walk at a steady pace.
  • The paths are open and the weather is reasonable.
  • Your return train leaves with a generous margin.

Allow roughly two to three additional hours for the gorge, including transfers and waiting. Do not judge the schedule only by the walking distance shown on a map.

The route contains many steps and wet surfaces. It can feel more tiring than the Three Natural Bridges, particularly after rain. Once you begin the gorge route, opportunities to shorten the walk are limited.

Skip Longshuixia if you are traveling with a senior who has knee problems, a young child, someone with limited mobility, or anyone uncomfortable on slippery steps. It is also sensible to skip it if you arrive at the visitor centre around midday or need to catch an early return train.

For most first-time visitors on a day trip, the Three Natural Bridges alone provides a complete Wulong experience. Add Longshuixia only when time, weather, mobility, and energy all support it.

A Realistic Day-Trip Schedule

This schedule is deliberately flexible. Match it to the trains available on your travel date.

Early Morning: Chongqing to Wulong

Leave your hotel with enough time to reach Chongqing East approximately one hour before departure. Take an early high-speed train to Wulong South.

After arrival, find the official tourist shuttle or take a licensed car to the Xiannüshan Tourist Reception Centre.

Late Morning: Tickets and Scenic Shuttle

Complete ticket or passport verification at the visitor centre. Use the official scenic shuttle to reach the Three Natural Bridges entrance.

Eat a light meal before entering if necessary. Food choices become less predictable once you begin the walking route.

Midday to Mid-Afternoon: Three Natural Bridges

Allow at least three hours for the descent, bridges, Tianfu Official Post Station, photography stops, and the exit route.

If it has rained, slow down on stone steps and wooden or paved surfaces. Mist can add atmosphere but may also obscure the upper cliffs.

Late Afternoon: Return to Wulong South

After leaving the attraction, follow the official route back toward the visitor centre. Confirm the next transfer to Wulong South before stopping for a meal or shopping.

Aim to reach the railway station at least 45 minutes before departure. The road transfer is the least predictable part of the return journey.

Evening: Return to Chongqing

After arriving at Chongqing East, use Line 6 or a taxi to return to your hotel.

Keep the evening free. A full Wulong day is tiring, and adding Hongya Cave or another crowded night attraction rarely improves it.

Weather and What to Wear

Wulong is cooler and wetter than central Chongqing, particularly in the mountains. Conditions can change during the day.

Wear:

  • Shoes with a strong, slip-resistant sole
  • Quick-drying trousers
  • A light waterproof jacket
  • An extra layer in spring, autumn, or winter
  • Sun protection in clear weather

Carry water, but avoid an unnecessarily heavy bag. The descent and steps become harder when carrying too much.

In summer, the valley may feel humid even when temperatures are lower than in central Chongqing. During heavy rain, storms, ice, maintenance, or crowd controls, parts of the route may close temporarily.

Is Wulong Suitable for Seniors or Limited Mobility?

The transport journey is manageable, but the attraction itself requires care.

The entrance lift reduces part of the descent. It does not make the entire route step-free. Visitors still encounter slopes, stairs, long walking sections, wet paving, and limited opportunities to shorten the route once inside.

An active senior who walks regularly may enjoy the Three Natural Bridges at a slow pace. Someone with knee problems, poor balance, or limited stamina may find the route difficult.

In that case, consider:

  • Staying overnight near the visitor centre
  • Visiting only the Three Natural Bridges
  • Hiring a private licensed transfer
  • Avoiding Longshuixia Fissure Gorge
  • Checking current accessibility facilities before booking
  • Turning back before entry if weather makes the path unsafe

Wheelchair users should contact the attraction directly. The complete valley route should not be assumed accessible.

Day Trip or Overnight Stay?

Choose a day trip if the Three Natural Bridges is your main priority and you are comfortable with an early start.

Stay overnight if you want to visit two or more of the following:

  • Three Natural Bridges
  • Longshuixia Fissure Gorge
  • Fairy Mountain
  • Furong Cave
  • Furong River
  • The Impression Wulong evening performance

An overnight stay also gives you more protection against rain, train delays, and missed connections. Accommodation around Xiannüshan Town is more convenient for the bridges and Fairy Mountain than staying near Wulong’s urban railway area.

Travelers continuing toward Zhangjiajie can also consider Wulong as an overnight stop rather than returning to central Chongqing. Check the current train schedule before building the route around this idea.

Ruqin’s Practical Advice

For most first-time visitors, the best Wulong plan is simple: take an early train from Chongqing East to Wulong South, visit the Three Natural Bridges, and return on a pre-booked evening train.

Do not build the day around every attraction shown on a Wulong map. The high-speed train is fast, but road transfers and scenic shuttles still take time. One well-paced attraction is better than three hurried entrances.

If you are fit and the weather is good, add Longshuixia Fissure Gorge. If you travel with seniors, children, or anyone with knee problems, keep the day to the bridges—or stay overnight and move more slowly.
