Wuzhen (乌镇) is one of the most attractive water towns between Shanghai and Hangzhou. Its canals, stone bridges, traditional houses and evening lights make it a worthwhile stop on a trip through eastern China.
However, getting to Wuzhen requires a little planning, especially if you are traveling by high-speed train.
The first thing to remember is simple: Wuzhen does not have its own railway station.
Instead, most train travelers use Tongxiang Railway Station (桐乡站), then continue to Wuzhen by bus or taxi.
In this guide, I’ll explain how to travel from Shanghai to Wuzhen, explore its two scenic zones, and continue to Hangzhou without returning to Shanghai.
1. Shanghai to Wuzhen to Hangzhou: Transport Overview
The most practical route combines high-speed trains with local transport.
Recommended route:
Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站) → Tongxiang Railway Station (桐乡站) → Wuzhen (乌镇) → Tongxiang Railway Station → Hangzhou East Railway Station (杭州东站).

Shanghai to Wuzhen to Hangzhou Transport Map
Here is a quick overview of the journey.
| Journey | Transport | Approximate Time |
|---|---|---|
| Shanghai Hongqiao → Tongxiang | High-speed train | 33–50 minutes |
| Tongxiang Station → Wuzhen | Taxi or local bus | Taxi 30–40 Bus 60–90 minutes |
| East Scenic Zone → West Scenic Zone | Free shuttle or taxi | Short local transfer |
| Wuzhen → Tongxiang Station | Bus or taxi | Taxi 30–40 Bus 60–90 minutes |
| Tongxiang → Hangzhou East | High-speed train | 17–30 minutes |
The route works in either direction. However, I recommend traveling from Shanghai to Wuzhen first, then continuing to Hangzhou.
This avoids unnecessary backtracking.
If you have enough time, stay overnight in Wuzhen. You can enjoy the evening canals without worrying about catching the last train.
2. Getting to Tongxiang Station from Shanghai by High-Speed Train
For most international travelers, the easiest starting point is Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站).
From here, take a high-speed train to Tongxiang Railway Station (桐乡站), the main railway gateway to Wuzhen.
Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station
Shanghai Hongqiao is the preferred departure station because it has frequent high-speed train services toward Tongxiang.
The journey normally takes around 33–50 minutes, depending on the train and its intermediate stops.

Departure Hall at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站)
Second-class tickets can start at approximately 40 RMB, although prices vary by service and departure time.
Some faster trains complete the journey in about 33 minutes. Most travelers should allow 40–45 minutes for the train ride.
Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is also convenient if you are staying near Hongqiao Airport or arriving by metro.
However, the station is large. I recommend arriving at least 30–45 minutes before departure to allow time for security and finding your boarding gate.
Alternative: Shanghai South Railway Station
Shanghai South Railway Station (上海南站) may also have direct trains to Tongxiang.
These services are generally less frequent than those from Shanghai Hongqiao.
The journey can take around 41–51 minutes, with second-class fares starting at approximately 42 RMB on some services.
If your hotel is in southern Shanghai, check departures from Shanghai South before traveling across the city to Hongqiao.
How to Book Your Train
You can check schedules and purchase tickets through Railway 12306 or Trip.com.
For international travelers, I recommend using the same passport for booking and boarding.
Train schedules can change, so check your actual departure station and arrival time before purchasing.
Ruqin’s Practical Tip: Don’t book your onward train from Tongxiang too tightly. Although the train journey from Shanghai is short, reaching Wuzhen requires another transfer.
3. Getting from Tongxiang Railway Station to Wuzhen
After arriving at Tongxiang Railway Station (桐乡站), you still need to reach Wuzhen.
The road journey is roughly 30–40 minutes by taxi, depending on traffic and your destination.

Tongxiang Railway Station
You have two main options: local buses or a taxi.
Option 1: Local Bus K282 and K350
The budget-friendly option is to use local buses.
Where to Find Bus K282 at Tongxiang Railway Station
After exiting Tongxiang Railway Station (桐乡站), turn right and look for the Tourist Information Center (游客咨询中心).
The bus stop is located at the platform behind the information center.

The bus stop is located at the platform behind the information center
Bus K282 is one of the main local bus routes connecting Tongxiang Railway Station with Wuzhen Bus Station (乌镇汽车站).
Bus K282 Route and Travel Time: Bus K282 covers approximately 27 kilometers, stopping at more than 30 stations along the way. The journey usually takes around 60–90 minutes.
After arriving at Wuzhen Bus Station (乌镇汽车站), you can transfer to a local shuttle bus to reach the East Scenic Zone (东栅) or West Scenic Zone (西栅).
Step 1: Take Bus K282 to Wuzhen Bus Station
After leaving Tongxiang Railway Station, follow the signs toward the local bus area.

Taking a crowded Bus K282 on the way from Tongxiang to Wuzhen
Bus K282 (桐乡公交K282路) connects the railway station with Wuzhen Bus Station (乌镇汽车站).
The fare is approximately 5 RMB.
Step 2: Transfer to Bus K350
At Wuzhen Bus Station, transfer to local Bus K350 (乌镇公交K350路).

Wuzhen Bus Station
This service connects the bus station with Wuzhen’s main visitor areas, including the West Scenic Zone.
The fare is approximately 1 RMB.
The ride to the West Scenic Zone visitor area is short, but allow additional time for waiting and walking.
Check the current K350 route and stop names before boarding, particularly if you are heading to the East Scenic Zone.
Important: Local bus schedules, frequencies and operating hours can change. Check the current K282 and K350 timetables at the station or in Amap (高德地图). Do not assume buses run late into the evening.
Option 2: Taxi or DiDi
If you are traveling with luggage or arriving later in the day, I recommend taking a taxi or DiDi directly from Tongxiang Railway Station.
The journey usually takes around 30–40 minutes.
A typical taxi fare may be approximately 70–80 RMB, depending on traffic, the exact destination and the service used.
For navigation, use one of these Chinese destinations:
- 乌镇西栅景区 — Wuzhen West Scenic Zone
- 乌镇东栅景区 — Wuzhen East Scenic Zone
- 乌镇汽车站 — Wuzhen Bus Station
Make sure your driver knows which scenic zone you want to visit.
The two zones have separate entrances, so simply entering “Wuzhen” may not be specific enough.
Ruqin’s Practical Tip: For two or three travelers sharing the fare, a taxi can be a sensible choice. It saves a transfer and takes you directly to your preferred entrance.
4. Wuzhen East Scenic Zone or West Scenic Zone?
Wuzhen has two main visitor areas: East Scenic Zone (东栅景区) and West Scenic Zone (西栅景区).
Although both feature canals, stone bridges and traditional buildings, they offer different experiences.
East Scenic Zone (东栅景区): Traditional Streets and Local Culture
East Scenic Zone is smaller and has a more traditional town atmosphere.

Taking a boat ride at Wuzhen East Scenic Zone
You can walk along narrow lanes, visit old houses and see examples of Jiangnan water-town architecture.
Some of the best-known attractions include:
- Former Residence of Mao Dun (茅盾故居)
- Jiangnan Hundred Beds Museum (江南百床馆)
- Hongyuantai Dyehouse (宏源泰染坊)
- Xiuzhen Temple (修真观)
Traditional performances, including shadow puppetry and folk shows, may also be available on selected days.
Allow around 2–3 hours to explore East Scenic Zone at a comfortable pace.
I particularly recommend it if you enjoy traditional architecture, local history and quieter daytime sightseeing.
West Scenic Zone (西栅景区): Canals, Evening Lights and Overnight Stays
West Scenic Zone is larger and has more developed visitor facilities.
Its canals, bridges and traditional-style buildings create one of Wuzhen’s most recognizable landscapes.

Drinking Tea at Wuzhen West Scenic Zone
The area is especially beautiful in the evening, when lights reflect across the waterways.
Popular places include:
- Muxin Art Museum (木心美术馆)
- Wuzhen Old Post Office (乌镇老邮局)
- Caomu Bense Dyehouse (草木本色染坊)
- White Lotus Pagoda (白莲塔)
You can also enjoy a traditional rowing-boat ride, subject to weather and operating arrangements.
West Scenic Zone offers a range of accommodation, including guesthouses and hotels within the managed visitor area.
Allow at least 3–4 hours, or longer if you plan to enjoy the evening.
If this is your first visit to Wuzhen and you can only choose one area, I recommend West Scenic Zone.
Its canal scenery and evening atmosphere make it especially memorable.
East Scenic Zone vs. West Scenic Zone
| Feature | East Scenic Zone | West Scenic Zone |
|---|---|---|
| Main appeal | Traditional streets and cultural heritage | Canal scenery and evening lights |
| Suggested visit | 2–3 hours | 3–4 hours or longer |
| Best time | Morning or afternoon | Afternoon and evening |
| Accommodation | More limited | Wider choice |
| Best for | History and local culture | First-time visitors and overnight stays |
Both zones have their own ticket arrangements. Check current admission prices and combination-ticket options before your visit.
5. Free Shuttle Between Wuzhen East and West Scenic Zones
The two scenic zones are approximately 1.5 kilometers apart.
You can travel between them using the local shuttle service, a taxi or, if you prefer, a walk.

Free Shuttle Between Wuzhen East and West Scenic Zones
A free shuttle has traditionally operated between the two visitor areas during the day.
The transport information for the seasonal timetable is:
| Season | Reported Operating Hours | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| May–September | 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. | About every 20 minutes |
| October–April | 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. | About every 20 minutes |
These times are useful for planning, but should be confirmed with the scenic area on the day of travel.
During busy holidays, additional shuttle services may operate.
Ruqin’s Practical Tip: If you plan to visit both zones, explore East Scenic Zone first and transfer to West Scenic Zone during the afternoon. This leaves time to enjoy the illuminated canals after sunset.
Don’t rely on the free shuttle for a late-evening transfer.
6. Continuing from Wuzhen to Hangzhou
After visiting Wuzhen, you can continue directly to Hangzhou without returning to Shanghai.
The usual train route is:
Wuzhen → Tongxiang Railway Station → Hangzhou East Railway Station (杭州东站).
This is generally the most efficient choice for independent travelers.
Step 1: Return to Tongxiang Railway Station
From Wuzhen, travel back to Tongxiang Railway Station by local bus or taxi.
Bus K282 is a useful option from Wuzhen Bus Station.
The fare is approximately 5 RMB, although the journey can take 60–90 minutes depending on stops, waiting and traffic.
Some services on route K281 may also connect the Wuzhen area with Tongxiang Railway Station.
However, don’t assume that K281 and K282 have identical stops or schedules. Check the current route in Amap before setting out.
A taxi is easier if you are carrying luggage or have a fixed train departure.
Allow enough time to reach the station and pass through railway security.
Step 2: Take a High-Speed Train to Hangzhou East
From Tongxiang Railway Station, take a high-speed train to Hangzhou East Railway Station (杭州东站) or Hangzhoudong Railway Station.
The train journey is surprisingly short.
Faster services may take approximately 17–20 minutes, while other trains take around 20–30 minutes.
Second-class fares can start at approximately 17–22 RMB, depending on the train.

Arriving at Hangzhou East Railway Station (Hangzhoudong Railway Station).
Hangzhou East is one of Hangzhou’s main transport hubs.
It connects with several metro lines, including Lines 1, 4, 6 and 19, making it convenient for reaching different parts of the city.
From Hangzhou East, you can continue toward West Lake (西湖), your hotel or other attractions.

Boating on the West Lake in Hangzhou
Ruqin’s Practical Tip: If you are staying near West Lake, remember that Hangzhou East Railway Station is not beside the lake. Allow additional time for the metro or taxi journey into central Hangzhou.
7. Alternative: Direct Bus or Taxi from Wuzhen to Hangzhou
Returning to Tongxiang Railway Station is not the only way to reach Hangzhou.
Depending on your schedule, a direct coach or private transfer may be more convenient.
Direct Bus to Hangzhou
Wuzhen has had intercity coach services toward Hangzhou, including connections with major transport hubs.
Reported journey times are approximately 1.5–2 hours, with fares around 35–40 RMB on some services.
The advantage is that you may avoid returning to Tongxiang Railway Station.
However, bus routes, destinations and departure frequencies can change.
Before choosing this option, confirm that your bus goes to a convenient Hangzhou terminal. Don’t assume every service stops at Hangzhou East Railway Station.
Taxi or Private Transfer
Wuzhen is approximately 75–90 kilometers from central Hangzhou, depending on your destination.
A direct car journey normally takes around 1.5–2 hours, depending on traffic.
This can be a practical option for families, small groups or travelers carrying several suitcases.
The total fare will be considerably higher than using public transport. Ask for the full price, including tolls, before confirming a private transfer.
For most solo travelers, the combination of local transport and high-speed train remains the more economical choice.
8. One-Day or Two-Day Shanghai–Wuzhen–Hangzhou Itinerary?
You can visit Wuzhen while traveling from Shanghai to Hangzhou, but your schedule makes a big difference.
Option A: One-Day Transfer with Wuzhen Sightseeing
This option works if you have limited time and want to see Wuzhen before continuing to Hangzhou.
Suggested plan:
- 7:00–8:00 a.m. — Leave Shanghai Hongqiao by high-speed train.
- 8:00–9:30 a.m. — Arrive at Tongxiang and transfer to Wuzhen.
- 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. — Explore East Scenic Zone, or spend this time in West Scenic Zone.
- 12:30–1:30 p.m. — Lunch.
- 1:30–4:30 p.m. — Continue sightseeing in West Scenic Zone.
- Late afternoon — Return to Tongxiang Railway Station.
- Evening — Take a high-speed train to Hangzhou East.
This is a full day, so travel light and avoid booking tight connections.
The main drawback is that you may miss Wuzhen’s best evening scenery.
Option B: Two-Day Journey with an Overnight Stay in Wuzhen
If your schedule allows, I prefer this option.
Day 1: Shanghai to Wuzhen
Take a morning train from Shanghai Hongqiao to Tongxiang.
Transfer to Wuzhen and explore East Scenic Zone during the day.
In the afternoon, continue to West Scenic Zone.
Enjoy dinner and the illuminated canals before staying overnight.
Day 2: Wuzhen to Hangzhou
Spend the morning exploring West Scenic Zone at a slower pace.
Then return to Tongxiang Railway Station and take a high-speed train to Hangzhou East.
You can reach Hangzhou in the afternoon and still have time for a walk near West Lake.
This route gives you more time to enjoy Wuzhen without rushing.
9. Practical Travel Tips for International Visitors
A few simple preparations will make this journey much easier.
Book the right railway stations. When leaving Shanghai, select Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥) or another station with a confirmed direct service to Tongxiang (桐乡). For the onward journey, check trains from Tongxiang to Hangzhou East (杭州东).
Use Chinese place names for navigation. Amap (高德地图) is useful for local buses, walking directions and taxi pickup points. Save the Chinese names of your stations and scenic-zone entrances.
Check local bus schedules. K282, K350 and other local services may have seasonal or temporary adjustments. Confirm the last departure before relying on a bus connection.
Allow time for transfers. High-speed trains are fast, but reaching Wuzhen from Tongxiang takes additional time. Avoid booking train connections based only on the rail journey.
Plan your luggage arrangements. If you are staying overnight, ask your Wuzhen accommodation whether it can receive or store your luggage. If you are visiting for only a few hours, confirm storage arrangements before traveling.
Choose your scenic zone carefully. East Scenic Zone is better for traditional streets and cultural attractions. West Scenic Zone is my choice for evening scenery and an overnight stay.
Check your tickets. Railway tickets and scenic-area admission tickets are separate. Confirm current Wuzhen admission prices and whether a combined East–West ticket suits your plans.
Carry your passport. Use the same passport details for train reservations and railway identification checks.
Avoid holiday travel when possible. Weekends and Chinese public holidays can bring heavier crowds, longer queues and more expensive accommodation.
Check temporary traffic controls. Wuzhen hosts the World Internet Conference, and major events can affect local roads, buses and visitor access. Check local announcements before traveling during event periods.
10. Final Thoughts: Is Shanghai–Wuzhen–Hangzhou Worth the Journey?
I think Shanghai → Wuzhen → Hangzhou is one of the most rewarding short routes in eastern China.
You begin with Shanghai’s modern city life, slow down among Wuzhen’s canals and stone bridges, then continue to Hangzhou’s lakeside scenery.
The transport is straightforward once you understand the main connection: Tongxiang Railway Station is the gateway to Wuzhen.
For a quick visit, you can travel from Shanghai to Wuzhen and continue to Hangzhou on the same day.
However, if you have the time, I recommend spending one night in Wuzhen. The evening lights and quieter morning streets are worth the extra stop.
With a little planning, you can enjoy three very different destinations without unnecessary backtracking.
