Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong: Train and Shuttle Map

Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong: Train and Shuttle Map

Traveling from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong has become much easier since the railway to Huanglongjiuzhai Station opened in August 2024.

For most independent travelers, the most practical option is to take a train from Chengdu East Railway Station and then transfer to a scenic-area shuttle bus.

However, there is one important detail to understand before booking.

The train does not take you directly to Jiuzhaigou National Park or Huanglong Scenic Area.

You must get off at Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station (黄龙九寨站), then continue by road. The two attractions are in different directions and require separate shuttle connections.

This guide explains how to make these transfers, what the journey costs, and how to visit both attractions without unnecessary backtracking.

1. Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong Train and Shuttle Map

The map shows the main transport route from Chengdu to Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station, followed by two road connections.

RouteTravel TimeApproximate Fare
Chengdu East → Huanglongjiuzhai Station 1 hr 40 min–2.5 hrs¥122–151
Huanglongjiuzhai Station → Jiuzhaigou1.5–2.5 hrs¥40–56
Huanglongjiuzhai Station → Huanglong40–60 min¥20–30

These are planning estimates. Actual fares and travel times depend on the train, shuttle operator, traffic and season.

The map is a transport schematic rather than a detailed road map.

The most important point: Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station is a transport hub, not the entrance to either scenic area.

2. Take the Train from Chengdu East

Start at Chengdu East Railway Station (成都东站), one of Chengdu’s main high-speed railway stations.

Search for trains to Huanglongjiuzhai (黄龙九寨) on the official China Railway 12306 website.

The fastest services take approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. Many others take around two hours.

Second-class tickets generally cost about ¥122–151, depending on the service.

For most travelers, I recommend taking a morning train. This gives you more flexibility for the shuttle connection and the rest of your day.

Which Train Should You Choose?

You may see train numbers such as C5782 or C5766 when searching the route.

However, train numbers, departure times and fares can change.

Rather than relying on a timetable copied from a travel website, check the actual service on 12306 for your travel date.

Before booking, confirm:

  • The departure station is Chengdu East (成都东), or another Chengdu station you can reach.
  • The arrival station is Huanglongjiuzhai (黄龙九寨).
  • Your arrival time allows a suitable shuttle connection.

Chinese railway tickets normally become available 15 days before departure, including the travel date.

During weekends and major holidays, popular trains may sell out quickly. Book your return journey at the same time if your itinerary is fixed.

3. Transfer from Huanglongjiuzhai Station to Jiuzhaigou

After leaving the train, follow the signs for the scenic-area shuttle buses (景区直通车).

Look for the service marked Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area (九寨沟景区).

The park entrance is approximately 90–93 kilometres from the railway station.

The shuttle journey generally takes around two hours, although mountain traffic and weather can affect the journey.

The standard fare is commonly around ¥51 per person.

Some services can be booked in advance through local transport platforms or ticketing apps.

I recommend reserving the shuttle before traveling, particularly during the autumn sightseeing season.

How Much Does the Journey Cost?

For one adult traveling from Chengdu East to Jiuzhaigou:

TransportEstimated Cost
Second-class train ticket¥122–151
Scenic-area shuttle¥40–56
Total one-way transport¥162–207

Allow approximately ¥180–210 for a typical one-way journey.

This does not include accommodation, food or admission to Jiuzhaigou National Park.

Should You Visit Jiuzhaigou on the Same Day?

For most visitors, I would not recommend taking a train from Chengdu and trying to see the entire national park immediately afterward.

Even with a fast train, you need time for the road shuttle, hotel transfer and park entrance procedures.

Jiuzhaigou is a large scenic area. It deserves most of a day.

My recommendation is to travel from Chengdu, stay overnight near the park entrance, and begin sightseeing early the following morning.

Look for accommodation around Jiuzhaigou Goukou (九寨沟沟口), the main entrance area.

4. Transfer from Huanglongjiuzhai Station to Huanglong

Huanglong Scenic Area (黄龙景区) is much closer to the railway station.

The road distance is approximately 26 kilometres, and the journey usually takes around 40–60 minutes.

After leaving Huanglongjiuzhai Station, follow the signs for the Huanglong scenic-area shuttle.

Tickets for shared shuttle services may cost around ¥20–30 per person.

Confirm the departure time and final stop before boarding.

The shuttle should take you to the Huanglong visitor entrance area, where you can continue toward the cableway or walking route.

How Much Does the Journey Cost?

A typical one-way journey from Chengdu East to Huanglong costs approximately:

  • Train: ¥122–151
  • Shuttle: ¥20–30
  • Total: ¥142–181

This is transport only. Huanglong admission, cableway tickets and other sightseeing services are separate.

How Long Should You Spend at Huanglong?

Allow approximately four to five hours if you want to enjoy the main scenic route without rushing.

Huanglong is famous for its colourful limestone pools, mountain scenery and high-altitude forests.

The most famous area is the Five-Colour Ponds (五彩池).

For many visitors, taking the cableway uphill and walking downhill is more comfortable than climbing the entire route.

However, the cableway does not take you directly to every major viewpoint. Some walking and uphill sections are still necessary.

Check the current opening hours and cableway schedule before planning a same-day return to Chengdu.

5. Visiting Both Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong

If you want to see both attractions, I recommend allowing at least two days, preferably three.

Trying to combine everything into one day leaves very little room for transport delays or proper sightseeing.

Option A: Two-Day Highlights

Day 1: Chengdu → Huanglong → Jiuzhaigou

Take an early train from Chengdu East to Huanglongjiuzhai Station.

Transfer to Huanglong Scenic Area and spend several hours exploring the colourful pools.

After sightseeing, arrange onward transport to your hotel near Jiuzhaigou.

This final transfer is important. Do not assume the ordinary Huanglong shuttle automatically continues to Jiuzhaigou.

Book a suitable connecting shuttle, shared vehicle or private transfer in advance.

Day 2: Jiuzhaigou National Park

Start early and spend most of the day inside Jiuzhaigou.

After visiting the park, stay another night or return toward Huanglongjiuzhai Station if your transport schedule allows.

This is a relatively full itinerary, particularly on the second day.

Option B: Three-Day Relaxed Route

For first-time international travelers, I prefer this arrangement.

Day 1: Chengdu → Huanglongjiuzhai Station → Huanglong → Jiuzhaigou hotel.

Day 2: Full-day visit to Jiuzhaigou National Park.

Day 3: Return to Huanglongjiuzhai Station and take the train back to Chengdu.

The third day gives you more flexibility and avoids rushing to catch an evening train after sightseeing.

6. Other Transport Options: Shared Cars and Private Transfers

The scenic-area shuttle is usually the most economical choice for one or two travelers.

However, it is not the only option.

Shared Cars

Shared cars are useful when the regular shuttle timetable does not match your train.

A seat from Huanglongjiuzhai Station to Jiuzhaigou may cost approximately ¥60–71.

Prices depend on the operator, vehicle and season.

Confirm whether the service goes directly to your hotel or stops at a central drop-off point.

Private Transfers

For families or small groups, a private transfer may be more convenient.

Indicative local prices sometimes start around ¥200–300 for a five-seat car or ¥350–450 for a seven-seat vehicle on selected routes.

However, prices vary significantly by destination and service. A transfer to Huanglong is not necessarily priced the same as one to Jiuzhaigou.

Ask the driver to confirm the total price, luggage capacity, destination and any waiting charges before booking.

A private transfer is particularly useful if you are traveling with children, older relatives or several large suitcases.

7. Tickets and Entrance Fees

Train tickets, scenic-area shuttles and park admission are normally purchased separately.

Jiuzhaigou National Park

During the 2026 peak season, the standard admission price is ¥190, with an additional ¥90 for the park’s sightseeing bus.

The sightseeing bus is an important part of visiting Jiuzhaigou because the scenic area is very large.

Book through the official Jiuzhaigou reservation channels and check the current entry period.

Huanglong Scenic Area

Huanglong’s 2026 peak-season admission price is ¥170 for adults.

Cableway and sightseeing vehicle services are charged separately.

Check the official reservation platform for the latest availability and operating arrangements.

Do not confuse the road shuttle from the railway station with the sightseeing transport inside the scenic area. They are different services.

8. High Altitude: What Travelers Should Know

Huanglong is a high-altitude destination, with parts of the sightseeing area above 3,000 metres.

Even if you feel comfortable in Chengdu, you may notice the thinner air after arriving in the mountains.

Walk slowly, especially on uphill paths. Drink water regularly and avoid strenuous exercise if you feel unwell.

Some visitors experience headaches, dizziness or unusual fatigue.

Do not ignore worsening symptoms.

If you develop significant altitude-related symptoms, stop climbing and seek assistance from scenic-area staff or medical personnel. Descending to a lower altitude may be necessary.

You may see recommendations to take hongjingtian (红景天, Rhodiola) before traveling. However, evidence that it reliably prevents altitude sickness is insufficient. Do not rely on it as protection.

Travelers with significant heart or lung conditions should seek medical advice before visiting high-altitude attractions.

9. Return Trains and Shuttle Connections

One of the easiest mistakes is booking a return train without checking the shuttle journey first.

Remember that you need time to travel from the scenic area back to Huanglongjiuzhai Station.

For Jiuzhaigou, allow approximately two hours for the road journey, plus a buffer for traffic and railway security.

For Huanglong, the road journey is shorter, but you still need time to leave the scenic area and reach the shuttle pickup point.

Do not assume the last shuttle always operates at 6:00 PM or that the final train departs at 6:40 PM.

These times can change.

Check the actual shuttle schedule and the return train on 12306 before finalizing your sightseeing plan.

If the connection looks tight, stay overnight rather than risk missing your train.

10. Ruqin’s Practical Tips

Choose the correct railway station. Huanglongjiuzhai (黄龙九寨) is the main rail gateway for both scenic areas.

Book the train and shuttle together. Do not buy a train ticket without checking onward transport.

Take an early train when possible. Morning arrivals give you more flexibility.

Keep the Chinese destination names handy. Show them to shuttle staff if you are unsure which bus to board.

Allow for mountain weather. Rain, fog and road conditions can affect transport and sightseeing.

Travel with a light daypack. Large suitcases are inconvenient inside the scenic areas. Ask your hotel or transport provider about luggage storage.

Do not underestimate Huanglong’s altitude. Even a relatively short visit can be tiring.

Avoid tight return connections. A relaxed overnight stay is often worth more than saving a few hours.

Final Notes from Ruqin

For most independent travelers, the best way to reach Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong from Chengdu is by train to Huanglongjiuzhai Station, followed by a scenic-area shuttle.

The railway journey is relatively fast and comfortable. The important part is planning the road connection after you arrive.

If you are visiting Jiuzhaigou only, travel to the park entrance area and stay overnight before sightseeing.

If you want to visit both Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, allow at least two days and arrange the transfer between the attractions in advance.

Use the transport map to understand the route, save the Chinese station names, and check the current train and shuttle schedules before departure.

A little preparation will make this beautiful part of Sichuan much easier to explore.
