The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) is one of the most popular attractions in Chengdu. However, many first-time visitors overlook one important detail: the Panda Base has two main entrances, the South Gate and the West Gate.
These entrances serve different parts of the park. They also have different metro stations and shuttle bus connections.
If you want to see the famous panda nurseries and spend only two or three hours at the base, the South Gate is usually the better choice. If you prefer newer facilities, quieter walking areas and a longer visit, consider entering through the West Gate.
In this guide, I’ll explain how to reach both gates, which entrance to choose, and how to plan your visit without unnecessary walking.
1. South Gate vs West Gate: Which Should You Choose?
The South Gate (南大门) serves the original section of the Panda Base. The West Gate (西大门) provides access to the newer expansion area.
Both entrances lead into the same large park, but the sightseeing experience is quite different.
| South Gate | West Gate | |
|---|---|---|
| Park section | Original area | New expansion |
| Main attractions | Sun Nursery, Moon Nursery, Panda Villas | Panda Tower, newer panda pavilions, Panda Valley |
| Crowds | Often busier | Generally quieter |
| Best for | First-time visitors, shorter visits | Photography, longer visits |
| Recommended time | 2–3 hours | 4–6 hours or longer |
| Metro station | Panda Avenue | Junqu General Hospital |
| Shuttle bus | 408 | 409 |
My recommendation: For a first visit with limited time, choose the South Gate. You will be closer to several well-known panda viewing areas.
During weekends and public holidays, however, the South Gate can become crowded. The West Gate may be a more comfortable alternative.
The two gates are far enough apart that I would not recommend walking between them simply to change entrances. Use the park’s sightseeing bus if you plan to visit both sections.
2. Chengdu Panda Base South Gate vs West Gate Transport Map

Chengdu Panda Base South Gate vs West Gate Transport Map
The transport map shows the two entrances, their Metro Line 3 connections and the main attractions inside the Panda Base.
There is one simple rule to remember:
South Gate: Metro Line 3 → Panda Avenue Station → Shuttle 408.
West Gate: Metro Line 3 → Junqu General Hospital Station → Shuttle 409.
Both shuttle services are separate from the sightseeing buses operating inside the Panda Base.
Before leaving your hotel, decide which entrance you want to use. Otherwise, you may arrive at the wrong side of this large attraction.
3. How to Reach the South Gate by Metro
The South Gate is the traditional entrance to Chengdu Panda Base.
Take Chengdu Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue Station (熊猫大道站).
Use Exit A, then follow the signs to the shuttle bus stop. Take Bus 408 directly to the South Gate.
The shuttle fare is approximately RMB 2 per person.
Some transport guides also describe a 408 service from Exit D. However, the Panda Base’s current official transport instructions recommend Exit A, so I would follow that route unless signs at the station indicate otherwise.
There is another public transport option.
Take Metro Line 3 to Zoo Station (动物园站), then transfer to Bus 655 or 87 toward the South Gate.
For most international visitors, however, Panda Avenue Station and Shuttle 408 are easier to remember.
Once you arrive at the South Gate, follow the entrance signs and prepare your passport or the identification used for your ticket reservation.
4. How to Reach the West Gate by Metro
The West Gate is convenient for visitors planning to explore the newer panda enclosures.
Take Metro Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital Station (军区总医院站).
Leave through Exit B and follow the signs for the shuttle bus stop.
Board Bus 409, which travels directly to the West Gate.
The journey takes approximately 10 minutes, and the fare is around RMB 2.
You can also use public buses 110, 110A or 659 to Yulei Road Cuiwei Intersection (玉垒路翠微路口), followed by a walk of approximately 600 metres.
For first-time visitors, I recommend Shuttle 409 because it avoids the additional walk.
If you are taking a taxi or DiDi, enter the full destination name: Chengdu Panda Base West Gate (成都熊猫基地西大门).
Do not simply select Chengdu Panda Base. The driver may otherwise take you to the South Gate.
5. Direct Tourist Buses from Central Chengdu
You do not necessarily need to take the metro.
Chengdu operates dedicated tourist bus services connecting popular city attractions with the Panda Base.
Useful departure areas include:
- Chunxi Road (春熙路): Convenient for visitors staying in central Chengdu.
- Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子): A useful departure area if you plan to combine the Panda Base with sightseeing in the old city.
- Wuhou Shrine and Jinli (武侯祠、锦里): Tourist bus connections may be available depending on the operating schedule.
- Chengdu East Railway Station (成都东站): Some tourist services operate on selected days or during busy travel periods.
- Du Fu Thatched Cottage (杜甫草堂): Check the latest tourist bus announcements for available services to the West Gate.
Fares for many city tourist services are around RMB 8–10, although prices vary by route.
These buses are convenient because they reduce the need for metro transfers.
However, always check whether your bus goes to the South Gate or West Gate before boarding.
Routes and departure times can change, particularly outside weekends and holidays.
You can check services through the Chengdu Bus app, the Scenic Shuttle Bus WeChat mini-program, or the official Chengdu Tourist Sightseeing Bus account.
6. Getting Around Inside the Panda Base
The Panda Base is much larger than many first-time visitors expect.
Walking from one viewing area to another can take considerable time, especially when you include the newer western section.
Fortunately, the park operates an internal sightseeing bus service.
The current standard fare is RMB 30 per person for a day-use ticket, allowing passengers to board at designated stops during the ticket’s validity.
The sightseeing buses connect both gates with important attractions, including the Panda Villas, Sun Nursery, Panda Tower, Star Nursery and Panda Valley.
The routes are not identical in both directions. Check the stop list before boarding.
If you get off to visit an attraction, you may need to queue again before boarding the next bus.
During holidays, waiting times can be significant.
I recommend buying the sightseeing bus ticket if you plan to cross between the original and new sections of the park.
For a short South Gate visit, you may prefer to walk around the nearby panda viewing areas instead.
7. Three Recommended Panda Base Visiting Routes
Route A: Classic Highlights — 2–3 Hours
Best for: First-time visitors with limited time.
Entrance: South Gate
Exit: South Gate
Start at the South Gate and concentrate on the original park.
Visit the Panda Villas, Sun Giant Panda Nursery House (大熊猫太阳产房), and Moon Giant Panda Nursery House (大熊猫月亮产房), depending on which viewing areas are open.
These are among the best-known sections of the Panda Base.
Try to arrive early in the morning, when pandas are often more active and the temperature is cooler.
If you want to see the famous panda Huahua (花花), check the current enclosure information first. Her viewing location and public access arrangements may change.
Do not plan your entire visit around seeing one particular panda. Popular viewing areas can have long queues, especially during holidays.
Route B: Photography and New Park — 4–6 Hours
Best for: Visitors who prefer a quieter experience and more time for photography.
Entrance: West Gate
Suggested exit: West Gate or South Gate
Start at the West Gate and explore the newer panda viewing areas.
Look for the Shanyue Pavilion (山月馆), Jiangyue Pavilion (江月馆), and other panda pavilions shown on the official visitor map.
These areas have modern facilities and landscaped paths.
Continue toward Panda Tower (熊猫塔), one of the park’s most recognizable landmarks.
The tower has a distinctive bamboo-shoot-inspired design and provides elevated views when its observation areas are open.
Allow time to explore the surrounding paths rather than rushing between enclosures.
If you decide to finish at the South Gate, use the internal sightseeing bus and plan your return transport accordingly.
Route C: Full Panda Base Experience — 6–8 Hours
Best for: Visitors who want to explore both the original and newer sections.
Entrance: South Gate
Exit: West Gate
Begin at the South Gate and visit the original panda viewing areas.
Explore the Panda Villas and the Sun and Moon nurseries before continuing toward the newer section.
If you are interested in conservation, include the Giant Panda Museum (大熊猫博物馆), subject to its opening arrangements.
Then use the internal sightseeing bus to reach Panda Tower and the newer panda pavilions.
Finish your visit near the West Gate.
This route involves more walking and requires careful time management. It is not necessary for everyone, particularly families with young children or visitors who prefer a relaxed half-day visit.
8. Tickets, Opening Hours and Reservations
For the current 2026 summer schedule, the Panda Base uses two admission periods:
Morning admission: 7:30 AM–12:00 PM
Afternoon admission: 12:00 PM–5:00 PM
The park closes at 6:00 PM.
The standard adult admission price is RMB 55, while eligible students pay RMB 27.
Most visitors should book in advance through the Panda Base’s official WeChat account or an authorized ticketing platform.
Bring your original passport if you booked using your passport details.
Visitors aged 60 and above may qualify for free admission under the applicable rules. Check the current reservation and identification requirements before visiting.
Remember that the entrance ticket and internal sightseeing bus ticket are separate purchases.
Opening hours and admission arrangements can change seasonally, so check the official website before your visit.
9. Best Time to See the Pandas
I generally recommend visiting in the morning.
Pandas often become more active during cooler hours, particularly around feeding time.
On hot days, they may spend more time resting indoors or in shaded areas.
This is normal. The Panda Base adjusts outdoor activities to protect the animals from heat.
Do not assume that every panda will be visible in its outdoor enclosure.
Weekdays are usually preferable to weekends, while major Chinese holidays can bring particularly large crowds.
If you are interested in photography, a cloudy morning can provide softer light than a bright afternoon.
Be patient, keep your distance and follow the photography rules at each enclosure.
10. Ruqin’s Practical Tips
Choose your entrance before leaving the hotel. The South Gate and West Gate use different metro stations and shuttle buses.
Save the Chinese gate names. 南大门 means South Gate, while 西大门 means West Gate. These names are useful when asking drivers or station staff for directions.
Book your ticket in advance. Popular morning sessions can be busy, especially during weekends and holidays.
Wear comfortable shoes. The Panda Base has long paths, slopes and large distances between some attractions.
Bring drinking water. Allow time for rest breaks, particularly during warm weather.
Use the internal sightseeing bus when necessary. It can save considerable walking if you are visiting both sections.
Plan your exit as carefully as your entrance. If you enter through the South Gate and leave through the West Gate, you will need Bus 409 rather than Bus 408 to return to Metro Line 3.
Notes from Ruqin: South Gate or West Gate?
For most first-time visitors, I recommend South Gate for a short, classic panda visit.
It is closer to the original panda viewing areas and easy to reach using Metro Line 3 and Shuttle 408.
If you prefer newer facilities, fewer crowds and more time for photography, the West Gate is a good alternative. Take Metro Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital Station and transfer to Shuttle 409.
For a full-day visit, consider entering through one gate and leaving through the other.
Whichever route you choose, remember that seeing pandas is not about covering every enclosure. Allow time to watch them eat bamboo, climb, rest and interact with their surroundings.
That is often the most enjoyable part of visiting Chengdu Panda Base.
