Chongqing Zoo Panda Guide: Maps, Tickets, Metro and Best Time

Many travelers assume they must travel to Chengdu to see giant pandas. That is not always necessary. Chongqing Zoo has several panda enclosures, costs relatively little and sits beside a Metro Line 2 station.

For travelers already spending two or three days in Chongqing, the zoo offers a practical half-day panda visit without using an entire day for trains to and from Chengdu. Arrive shortly before the Panda House opens at 9:00 a.m., see the pandas first, and explore the rest of the zoo only if you have the time and interest.

2. Is Chongqing Zoo a Good Alternative to Chengdu?

Yes, if your main goal is simply to see giant pandas.

Chongqing Zoo is easier to reach than Chengdu’s major panda bases when you are already staying in Chongqing. You do not need to book a high-speed train, travel across Chengdu or devote most of the day to transport.

However, the two experiences are different.

Chongqing ZooChengdu Panda Base
Convenient urban locationLarge specialist breeding and research centre
Directly served by Metro Line 2Requires a metro-plus-shuttle or taxi journey
Suitable for a half-day visitOften requires most of a day
Lower admission costLarger and more extensive panda experience
Traditional city zoo with other animalsGreater emphasis on panda conservation and breeding
Practical for a Chongqing itineraryBetter for serious panda enthusiasts

Choose Chongqing Zoo if pandas are one part of your trip. Choose Chengdu if pandas are a main reason for visiting China and you want a larger specialist facility.

Do not plan a rushed Chongqing-to-Chengdu day trip solely because you think Chongqing has no pandas. The railway journey may be fast, but transfers between hotels, stations and the Chengdu panda facilities add considerable time.

3. How to Reach Chongqing Zoo by Metro

Take Metro Line 2 to Chongqing Zoo Station (动物园站). Use Exit 1 and walk along Xijiao Road to the zoo’s East Gate 2 (东二门).

The walk is short and clearly more manageable than the approaches to many central Chongqing attractions. The official zoo transport guidance specifically recommends this route.

Line 2 is also one of Chongqing’s elevated monorail lines. It connects the zoo area with Yangjiaping, Liziba, Daping and Jiaochangkou, making the zoo easy to combine with other sights.

From Jiefangbei

From Jiefangbei, reach Jiaochangkou Station (较场口站) and take Line 2 toward Yudong. Get off at Chongqing Zoo Station.

Allow approximately 40–50 minutes for the complete journey from central Jiefangbei, including walking and waiting. The rail journey itself may be shorter, but Chongqing’s large stations and street crossings require a buffer.

From Liziba

Take Line 2 directly from Liziba Station (李子坝站) toward Yudong. This creates an easy same-day combination because no line change is required.

If you visit the zoo first, you can ride back toward central Chongqing and stop at Liziba afterward.

Arriving With a Stroller or Limited Mobility

Chongqing Zoo Station has received accessibility improvements, including additional lift facilities. Nevertheless, check signs and ask station staff for the step-free route rather than automatically following the largest crowd.

The zoo itself covers a substantial area. Families with strollers and older travelers should focus on the Panda House and nearby sections instead of trying to complete every path.

4. Tickets and Entry

The standard adult admission price is generally around ¥25, with a lower seasonal price sometimes offered in December. Concessions may apply to children, students and older visitors, but eligibility and document requirements should be confirmed before travel.

Tickets may be available through:

  • Chongqing Zoo’s official WeChat account
  • The official website
  • Authorized Chinese travel platforms
  • Ticket windows at the entrance, subject to availability

Foreign visitors should use their passport details when required. Carry the original passport entered during online booking because staff may request it during verification.

A basic zoo ticket is sufficient for seeing the pandas. Be careful with combination products that add amusement rides, transport or unrelated attractions at a much higher price.

During major public holidays, online reservations, capacity limits or adjusted opening hours may apply. Do not assume an ordinary weekday ticketing process will remain unchanged during Chinese New Year, Labour Day or National Day.

5. Zoo Hours and Panda House Hours Are Different

The zoo currently opens at 8:00 a.m., and admission checks normally finish at 4:30 p.m. Individual animal areas follow their own schedules.

The Panda House opens from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. This distinction matters. Arriving at the zoo gate at 8:00 does not guarantee immediate access to the panda enclosures.

A sensible plan is to reach the entrance around 8:30–8:45 a.m. Complete ticket checks, use the toilet and walk toward the Panda House. You should then be ready when it opens.

6. The Best Time to See the Pandas

Morning is usually the best time.

Pandas tend to be more active around feeding periods and during cooler temperatures. Later, they may rest indoors or sleep away from the most convenient viewing areas.

Aim for 9:00–10:30 a.m. This gives you a reasonable chance of seeing pandas eating bamboo, moving between platforms or climbing.

However, animal behaviour is never guaranteed. A panda may remain indoors, sleep behind vegetation or move out of view. Do not expect every enclosure to produce a clear photograph.

Summer Visits

Chongqing summers are extremely hot and humid. Pandas may spend more time in cooler indoor areas, while visitors may find the zoo tiring by midday.

Visit as early as possible, carry water and use sun protection. Do not plan several hours of exposed walking during the afternoon.

Winter Visits

Cooler weather can be more comfortable for both pandas and visitors. December also tends to bring fewer visitors than summer or the major holiday periods.

Chongqing winters are damp, however. Wear warm layers and shoes with good grip because shaded paths can remain wet.

7. Inside the Panda House: Upper and Lower Areas

The Panda House (熊猫馆) at Chongqing Zoo has two main sections: the Upper Panda House (上馆) and the Lower Panda House (下馆). I recommend visiting both, as different pandas may be housed in each area.

Chongqing Zoo is home to more than 20 giant pandas, including several well-known pandas that attract visitors from across China.

Among the popular names are Yuke (渝可), Yu’ai (渝爱), and Liangyue (良月). You may also hear about the famous Sixi (四喜) panda family, including Chongchong (重重) and Qingqing (庆庆).

For photography enthusiasts, the Upper Panda House is particularly worth exploring. It is associated with the pandas known as Shuangchong Xiqing (双重喜庆), making it a popular place for visitors hoping to photograph these well-known pandas.

However, pandas may move between enclosures, and not every panda will be visible during your visit. Check the information boards or ask the zoo staff if you are hoping to see a particular panda.

Ruqin’s Practical Tip: Don’t spend all your time waiting at one enclosure. Walk through both the upper and lower sections first, then return to the pandas that are most active. Early morning is usually a better time to watch them feeding, climbing, and playing.

8. A Practical Panda-First Route

Enter through East Gate 2 and follow the internal signs for 大熊猫馆, meaning Panda House.

Do not begin with birds, monkeys or amusement areas if pandas are your priority. The morning activity period is limited, while the other sections remain available afterward.

A practical sequence is:

  1. Enter through East Gate 2.
  2. Walk directly to the Panda House.
  3. Visit the first active enclosure without stopping in a crowded doorway.
  4. Continue through the designated viewing route.
  5. Return to quieter enclosures if the crowd has moved.
  6. Visit the red pandas or other nearby animals.
  7. Decide whether to explore the wider zoo or leave before lunch.

On crowded days, staff may direct visitors through viewing areas in one direction. Follow the route rather than trying to push back against the flow.

9. Managing the Crowds

Panda activity attracts a crowd very quickly. One moving panda may draw most visitors away from otherwise quiet viewing areas.

Do not remain directly against the glass or railing after taking your photographs. Move aside so children and shorter visitors can see.

For a calmer visit:

  • Choose a weekday morning.
  • Avoid public holidays and summer weekends.
  • Reach the Panda House before it opens.
  • Continue past the first crowded enclosure.
  • Return after a tour group moves away.
  • Use a normal camera lens rather than blocking the view with a large tablet.
  • Avoid calling, tapping the glass or trying to attract the animals.

Tripadvisor reviews are mixed. Many visitors report close panda views and good value, while others mention pushing, blocked sightlines and concerns about some non-panda enclosures. These are traveler observations rather than official findings, but they are worth considering when deciding whether a traditional zoo suits you.

10. What Else Is Inside the Zoo?

Chongqing Zoo displays more than pandas. Other areas may include red pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, South China tigers, elephants, giraffes, birds and primates.

If your interest is mainly pandas, you do not need to complete the entire zoo. The site covers roughly 45 hectares, so walking through every section can turn a short visit into a tiring half day.

Families may appreciate the additional animals and children’s facilities. Adults with a tight sightseeing schedule can leave after the panda area and continue to Liziba or central Chongqing.

If you are uncomfortable visiting conventional zoos, research the facility before buying a ticket. The panda displays are the main attraction, but the wider site remains an urban zoological park rather than an open nature reserve.

11. Facilities, Food and Comfort

Use the toilet near the entrance before approaching the Panda House, especially when visiting with children. Queues and crowds make it inconvenient to leave and then recover your position.

Carry water, but do not feed the animals. Food outlets and vending machines may operate inside, although opening times and choices vary.

Comfortable shoes are important. The zoo is less vertically confusing than central Yuzhong, but it still involves considerable walking, outdoor paths and occasional slopes.

Large luggage will make the visit difficult. Leave suitcases at your hotel or railway station rather than bringing them through the zoo.

12. A Practical Half-Day Itinerary

8:15–8:45 a.m.: Travel to the Zoo

Take Line 2 to Chongqing Zoo Station and use Exit 1. Walk to East Gate 2 and complete ticket checks.

9:00–10:30 a.m.: Visit the Panda House

Go directly to the pandas. Spend more time at active enclosures and move past areas where the crowd blocks the view.

10:30–11:30 a.m.: See Other Animals

Choose the red pandas or one additional section. Avoid turning a focused panda visit into an exhausting attempt to cover the whole zoo.

Around Noon: Leave for Lunch

Eat around Yangjiaping or continue by Line 2 toward Liziba and central Chongqing.

Afternoon Option: Liziba and Jiefangbei

Stop at Liziba to watch the monorail pass through the residential building. Then continue toward Jiaochangkou for Jiefangbei, Shibati or Mountain City Alley.

This route is realistic because the zoo, Liziba and Jiaochangkou all sit along Line 2.

Ruqin’s Practical Advice

Chongqing Zoo is a sensible choice if you want to see pandas without adding a separate Chengdu excursion. It is inexpensive, directly connected to the metro and manageable within half a day.

Arrive shortly before the Panda House opens at 9:00 a.m. See the pandas first, then decide how much energy you want to spend on the wider zoo.

Choose a weekday morning if possible. In summer, leave before the strongest heat. For families, seniors and travelers with limited mobility, a focused panda visit is usually better than trying to walk through every animal area.
