Meanwhile, many public hospitals now offer services for foreign patients. You can use your passport to register, create a medical record, and make appointments online or offline.
However, public hospitals can be crowded. You may need more patience during busy hours. The advantage is that you can access excellent medical care at a reasonable cost.
International clinics and hospital international departments provide a different experience. They offer English and multilingual services, comfortable environments, and appointment-based visits. Therefore, they are a good choice if you value communication and convenience. However, the cost is usually higher.
2. Which Hospitals Can Foreign Visitors Trust in Chengdu?
Chengdu has many excellent hospitals. However, choosing the right one can save you time and stress.
For serious medical problems, I usually recommend large public tertiary hospitals. Meanwhile, international clinics are a good choice if you prefer English communication and a smoother experience.
Option 1： Strong Public Tertiary Hospitals
1) West China Hospital of Sichuan University (四川大学华西医院)

West China Hospital of Sichuan University (四川大学华西医院) is one of the most respected hospitals in western China. It is also one of Chengdu’s top medical resources.
The hospital’s Special Medical Service and International Medical Center provide services for foreign patients. They offer English assistance and international patient support.
Meanwhile, the hospital has developed the English version of the Huayitong (华医通) App. Foreign visitors can register by email, verify their passport information, and complete appointments and payments online.

2) The Third People’s Hospital of Chengdu (成都市第三人民医院)

Founded in 1941, The Third People’s Hospital of Chengdu (成都市第三人民医院) is another major tertiary hospital in the city.
Its Geriatrics Department and International Medical Center provide services for international patients. The hospital offers Chinese-English bilingual assistance and has received positive feedback from foreign consulates in Chengdu.
For foreign visitors, the biggest advantage is convenience. You can ask about appointments and medical procedures in both Chinese and English.

Chengdu BOE Hospital (成都京东方医院) is located in Tianfu International Bio-city, Shuangliu District. It is one of Chengdu’s largest international hospitals and provides modern facilities.
Aidi Eye Hospital (成都爱迪眼科医院) specializes in eye care. The hospital provides bilingual services and has treated patients from 27 countries. It also works with international insurance direct billing programs.

Global Doctor Chengdu Clinic (环球医生成都医疗中心)

4. The Whole Medical Visit in Chengdu: From Arrival to Medicine
For foreign visitors, a hospital visit in Chengdu may feel unfamiliar at first. However, the process is usually well organized once you understand the steps.
First, bring your passport and complete real-name registration. If it is your first visit, the hospital will create a medical record for you. Many hospitals also allow online registration through their official apps or WeChat accounts.
Next, use your patient card and passport to check in. Then, go to the correct department and wait for your number. International departments and special clinics usually provide staff guidance and a more comfortable waiting area.
During the consultation, explain your symptoms clearly. Meanwhile, doctors in international departments usually spend more time communicating with foreign patients.
If you need tests, pay first at the counter or self-service machine. Most hospitals accept Alipay, WeChat Pay, and international credit cards. Finally, take your prescription to the pharmacy to collect medicine.
For emergencies such as high fever, serious injuries, or severe abdominal pain, go directly to the emergency department. 5. How to Pay Medical Fees in Chengdu
After seeing the doctor, you need to complete payment. In Chengdu, the process is usually simple. However, the payment method depends on whether you pay by yourself or use international medical insurance.
For most public hospitals, self-payment is common. The cost is usually reasonable compared with many countries. A regular outpatient visit may cost around US$15–30, while specialist consultations are usually higher. Private international clinics generally charge more, with general consultations often around RMB 800–1,500.
You can usually pay with cash, Visa, Mastercard, Alipay, or WeChat Pay. Meanwhile, many hospitals now accept international credit cards, making payment easier for foreign visitors.
If you have international health insurance, check direct billing before your visit. Many hospitals and international clinics cooperate with global insurance companies. Then, you only need to show your insurance card, and the hospital can settle the bill directly with your insurer.
Finally, keep all documents, including medical reports, receipts, and expense details. These papers will help when you request reimbursement after returning home.
