Badaling Great Wall Day Tour Overview
Badaling is the most famous and one of the most spectacular Great Wall sections near Beijing. Its restored wall climbs dramatically over the mountains, with watchtowers stretching across the surrounding ridges.
It is also one of the easiest Great Wall sections to reach independently. You can take a high-speed train, direct public bus, tourist shuttle, or private car from Beijing.
Yes, Badaling can become crowded. However, I would not dismiss it simply because it attracts more visitors than Mutianyu.
The scenery is grand, the facilities are well developed, and transport is convenient. Badaling is also the strongest Great Wall choice around Beijing for many wheelchair users and travelers with limited mobility.
Who Is This Tour For?
I recommend Badaling for first-time visitors who want a straightforward Great Wall day without arranging private transport.
It works especially well for independent travelers because the high-speed train makes the journey relatively simple. Families and older travelers may also appreciate the developed visitor facilities.
Most importantly, Badaling has some of the best accessibility facilities among Beijing’s Great Wall sections. Accessible routes and ramps make parts of the experience possible for wheelchair users.
However, the Great Wall remains a mountain attraction. Always check current accessibility arrangements before traveling, especially if mobility is a major concern.

Detailed Badaling Great Wall Day Tour Itinerary
7:30 am — Leave Central Beijing
Start early, especially on weekends and during busy travel periods.
For independent travelers, I particularly like the high-speed train. It avoids road traffic and makes the journey predictable.
Another practical option is the direct public bus from Deshengmen. Tourist shuttle buses also leave from areas such as Qianmen.
Whichever option you choose, check the latest timetable before leaving your hotel.
8:30–9:30 am — Arrive at Badaling
Your arrival time will depend on your transport.
If you take the high-speed train, arrive at Badaling Great Wall Railway Station and follow signs toward the scenic area. The station was built to serve Great Wall visitors, making this route convenient for independent travelers.
Once you reach the visitor area, check your tickets and decide whether you want the North or South section.
Use the restroom and buy water before heading onto the wall.
9:30 am — Choose the North or South Great Wall
Badaling offers two main directions for visitors.
The North Great Wall is the more famous route. It offers dramatic views, numerous watchtowers, and some of Badaling’s best-known scenery.

However, it also attracts more visitors. If you want a slightly quieter experience, consider exploring the South Great Wall.
Both sections give you excellent mountain views. Therefore, you do not need to cover both in one visit.
9:45 am–12:30 pm — Explore Badaling Great Wall
Now give yourself around three hours on the wall.
Badaling feels broad and monumental. The restored stonework follows steep mountain ridges, creating some of the classic Great Wall views many travelers imagine before coming to China.

However, do not underestimate the gradients. Some sections become steep even though the surface is restored.
Stop regularly and look back along the wall. Often, the best view appears behind you rather than ahead.
If crowds gather around one watchtower, continue a little farther if your energy allows. Visitor numbers often thin as you move away from the easiest access points.
Cable Car or Walking?
You can use a cable car to reach the upper wall and save energy. For cable car down, you also can choose to slide down.
For many first-time visitors, this makes good sense. You can spend more time walking along the Great Wall rather than climbing from the bottom.

However, active travelers may prefer walking uphill. The climb gives you a stronger sense of the mountain terrain and makes reaching the wall feel more rewarding.
There is no right choice. Pick the route that suits your legs rather than someone else’s idea of how the Great Wall should be experienced.
12:30–1:00 pm — Descend from the Wall
Return by cable car or walk back toward the visitor area.
Walk down the north section at Badaling Great Wall
Allow extra time if Badaling is crowded. Queues can develop around cable cars and popular access points.
Once down, take a short rest before lunch.
1:00–2:00 pm — Lunch at Badaling
Have lunch around the Badaling visitor area.
You will find several dining options near the scenic area. I would keep the meal simple unless you have plenty of time before your return transport.

If you are traveling by train, check your departure time before sitting down. You do not want to turn lunch into a rush back to the station.
2:00–3:00 pm — Optional Great Wall Museum
If you still have time and energy, consider visiting the Great Wall Museum.
After walking on the wall, learning about its construction and history can make more sense. You now have the landscape fresh in your mind.
However, treat the museum as optional. If you prefer a slower lunch or more time on the wall, skip it.
3:00–3:30 pm — Start Your Return to Beijing
Make your way back to the railway station, bus stop, or parking area.
If you use the high-speed train, arrive at the station with enough time for security and boarding procedures.
Road travelers should allow for afternoon traffic. The journey back can take longer than the morning trip.
4:30–5:30 pm — Return to Central Beijing
You should reach central Beijing by late afternoon or early evening, depending on your transport.
Keep the evening flexible. After several hours on the wall, a relaxed dinner near your hotel usually works better than another major attraction.
Tickets, Transport & What to Bring
Badaling Great Wall Tickets
Badaling requires an entrance ticket. Cable cars and other transport within the scenic area may require separate tickets.
Book ahead during weekends, summer holidays, Chinese public holidays, and other busy periods. Also check current admission procedures before your visit.
Carry your passport. Foreign visitors may need it for reservations, ticket collection, or identity verification.
High-Speed Train from Beijing
For independent foreign travelers, the high-speed train is one of the most convenient ways to reach Badaling.
Trains run from Qinghe Railway Station to Badaling Great Wall Railway Station. The journey is fast and avoids Beijing’s unpredictable road traffic.
Qinghe Railway Station
Book your train ticket in advance, particularly during busy travel periods. Also allow enough time to find Qinghe Station and complete boarding procedures.
The return train deserves equal attention. Do not assume you can simply arrive at Badaling station and take the next train.
Direct Public Bus from Deshengmen
The direct public bus 877 from the Deshengmen area is a traditional low-cost way to reach Badaling.
It can work very well if you are comfortable using Beijing’s bus system. However, journey times depend more heavily on road traffic.
Make sure you board the correct official public bus. Around popular tourist transport points, ignore people trying to direct you toward unofficial services.
Tourist Shuttle from Qianmen
Tourist shuttle buses from Qianmen can be particularly convenient if you stay around central Beijing.
These services remove the need to navigate local bus transfers. However, departure and return times may be more fixed than traveling independently.
Check the current boarding location, timetable, and ticket arrangements before your travel day.
Private Car or Driver
A private car remains the easiest door-to-door option.
It works particularly well for families, small groups, older travelers, or visitors who need more flexibility. Your driver can collect you from the hotel and wait while you visit.
However, Badaling’s excellent train and bus connections mean a private car is less necessary here than at Mutianyu.
Accessibility at Badaling Great Wall
Badaling is the Great Wall section I would consider first for travelers who use wheelchairs or have significant mobility limitations.
It has some of the most developed accessible facilities among the Great Wall sections around Beijing. Accessible ramps and adapted routes can help visitors reach designated viewing areas.
However, accessibility does not mean that every watchtower or section of the wall is wheelchair accessible. The Great Wall still follows steep mountain terrain.
Therefore, check current accessible routes, lift or cable facilities, and operating conditions before your visit. If possible, contact the scenic area ahead of time for the latest information.
For travelers with limited walking ability, allow more time and keep the route simple. Reaching one good Great Wall viewpoint can be a complete experience.
What to Bring
Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip. Even at restored Badaling, slopes and stone steps can become steep.
Bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat during warmer months. Meanwhile, winter visitors should bring warm layers, gloves, and wind protection.
Carry your passport, charged phone, and portable power bank. If traveling by train, keep your train details easily accessible on your phone.
Finally, check the weather before leaving Beijing. Mountain weather can feel colder, windier, or more exposed than conditions downtown.

Badaling and Mutianyu often get compared, but I would not say that one is simply better than the other.
Mutianyu usually feels calmer and more relaxed. Badaling, however, feels grander and has much stronger public transport connections.
That makes Badaling particularly attractive for independent travelers. Taking a high-speed train from Beijing and arriving almost directly at the Great Wall is difficult to beat for convenience.
I would also choose Badaling first for many travelers with mobility concerns. Its accessibility infrastructure gives more visitors a realistic chance to experience the Great Wall.
The trade-off is crowds. Therefore, start early, avoid major Chinese holidays if possible, and walk beyond the busiest access points when your fitness allows.
Do that, and Badaling can still deliver exactly what many first-time visitors came to Beijing hoping to see: a magnificent Great Wall climbing across the mountains.
