My Growing Community in Hangzhou

Walking Turtle Hill: My Growing Community in Hangzhou

I have a little ritual I enjoy after my daily noon nap: a walk. It’s simple, peaceful, and a good way to stretch my legs and let my thoughts wander. Recently, during these walks, I noticed something new—a line of stone steps being built on the slope of Turtle Hill, just near the East Gate of my residential community.

Turtle Hill isn’t far, but for some reason, I hadn’t paid it much attention before. Today, though, curiosity got the better of me. The new steps seemed to call out to me, and I decided to follow them upward to see where they led.

When I reached the top, I paused and looked around. A breeze touched my face, and the view opened up. Below me stretched My Growing Community in Hangzhou—a patchwork of apartment buildings, schools, shops, and lives in motion. It’s hard to believe that when I moved here ten years ago, this area was mostly open hills and farmland. Now, it’s full of life. Everything has changed—rapidly and almost quietly.

Within 20 kilometers, we now have three major hospitals. Booking a doctor’s appointment is simple using the WeChat app. And if you’re in a rush, paying a bit extra lets you see a specialist even faster.

Sam’s Club, the American grocery chain, delivers groceries to my door in under an hour. It’s incredibly convenient—but I sometimes miss the warmth of the nearby Hualian Supermarket. I remember the last time I went, the vegetable manager looked up and asked, “Why don’t you come by as often anymore?” I smiled but didn’t know how to answer. Life just moves so fast now. I still feel a little guilty, thinking about the fate of those local shops.

I spotted a worker beside the path working.

As I began walking down the steps, I spotted a worker beside the path. He wasn’t hammering as I first thought—he was using a shovel to carefully scrape away soil that had slipped over the edges of the stone steps. With each quiet, focused movement, he leveled the dirt so it sat flush with the stones, making the path look smooth and tidy. It was patient, careful work. The kind of detail most people might not notice—but it made all the difference. I asked him what the project was, and he replied, “We’re building a park.”

A park! That single word made me smile. A peaceful green space, just a few steps from home—what a gift for the community. A place to walk, breathe, and simply enjoy being outdoors. For neighbors to gather, and children to play. I could already imagine the sunlight flickering through the trees once everything is complete.

My Growing Community in Hangzhou continues to surprise me. It blends tradition and progress, memory and momentum. As the capital of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou is full of energy and change. But even in winter, it feels like spring—green trees, green tea bushes, green fields all around. That greenness gives the city its spirit, and it gives me energy too.

Hangzhou is more than where I live—it’s where I’m from. I once worked in Beijing, then moved overseas to Canada. Now I’m back. Back to the place where tea smells like home and the breeze carries old memories.

East or West, home is still the best. And on a quiet afternoon like this, walking down Turtle Hill and watching the city grow beneath me, I feel it more deeply than ever.
