Itinerary designed by Ruqin

Overview
River travel gives you a different view of China. Roads and high-speed trains connect cities efficiently, but rivers reveal the landscapes between them.
The Li River is intimate and scenic. Boats pass limestone peaks, bamboo groves, farmland and small settlements before reaching Yangshuo. The classic cruise is one-way from the Guilin area to Yangshuo and usually takes around four to five hours.
The Yangtze River feels much larger. Between Chongqing and Yichang, the river cuts through Qutang, Wu and Xiling gorges. Most first-time travelers choose the classic Three Gorges route rather than a much longer Yangtze cruise.
Then Guangzhou changes the mood completely. Here, the Pearl River is urban. The evening cruise is less about wilderness and more about bridges, towers, waterfront architecture and the lights of modern Guangzhou.
That contrast is exactly why I would combine these three rivers.

Detailed Timed Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrive in Guilin
Afternoon – Arrival and Hotel Check-in
Arrive in Guilin and settle into your hotel. I would stay near the central lakes or the Li River rather than far outside the city.
Do not plan a major attraction today. Instead, keep your first day light, especially after a long international journey.
Evening – Guilin Waterfront Walk
After dinner, walk around the Two Rivers and Four Lakes area.

Walk around the Two Rivers and Four Lakes area
This first evening introduces the theme of the journey quietly. You see bridges, lakes, reflections and Guilin’s karst hills without committing to another long sightseeing day.
Overnight: Guilin
Day 2 – Li River Cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo
Morning – Transfer to the Cruise Pier
After breakfast, leave your hotel for the appropriate Li River cruise pier.
The main sightseeing cruise travels downstream from the Guilin area to Yangshuo. It is a one-way journey, so bring your luggage rather than returning to Guilin that afternoon.
Your exact pier depends on the boat category. Therefore, confirm the departure pier when booking.
Late Morning to Afternoon – Li River Cruise
Now the first real river journey begins.
The boat moves slowly through one of China’s most recognizable landscapes. Limestone pinnacles rise directly behind villages, fields and bamboo-lined riverbanks.

Late Morning to Afternoon – Li River Cruise
Stay outside whenever the weather allows.
Some of the finest scenery appears around Xingping, where tightly grouped karst peaks rise behind bends in the Li River. The cruise generally takes about four to five hours, although water conditions affect journey time.
Afternoon – Arrive in Yangshuo
After arriving, transfer to your hotel and slow down.
Yangshuo can become busy around West Street. However, you do not need to spend the entire afternoon there. I prefer accommodation closer to the countryside if river scenery matters more than nightlife.
Evening – Yangshuo
Have dinner locally and take an easy walk.

Have dinner locally and take an easy walk around West Street in Yangshuo
You have already spent several hours sightseeing from the boat, so there is little reason to fill the evening with another formal attraction.
Overnight: Yangshuo
Day 3 – Yangshuo Countryside & Yulong River
Morning – Yulong River Valley
Today gives you a closer look at rural Guangxi.
Explore the Yulong River countryside by bicycle, e-bike, walking or local transport. Rice fields, villages and limestone peaks create a much quieter landscape than central Yangshuo.

An optional short bamboo-raft trip on Yulong River
An optional short bamboo-raft trip can add another water experience. However, I would treat it as a countryside activity rather than another major cruise.
Afternoon – Slow Yangshuo
Leave part of the afternoon open.
Visit a village, sit beside the river or simply enjoy the landscape. This slower day balances the longer travel days ahead.
Overnight: Yangshuo
Day 4 – Yangshuo to Chongqing
Morning – Return Toward Guilin
Leave Yangshuo after breakfast and travel back toward Guilin.
Depending on your onward connection, continue to the appropriate railway station or airport.
Afternoon – Travel to Chongqing
Travel onward to Chongqing.
I would not add major sightseeing after arrival. Chongqing is large, steep and surprisingly tiring on foot.
Evening – First Look at Chongqing
If you still have energy, walk near your hotel or find a viewpoint over the rivers.
Save Hongyadong and the main waterfront areas for tomorrow.
Overnight: Chongqing
Day 5 – Discover Chongqing Before the Cruise
Morning – Mountain City
Start with central Chongqing.

Start with central Chongqing in the morning
Walk through parts of the old mountain city where stairways, elevated roads and buildings overlap. Chongqing makes much more sense once you understand its geography.
The Yangtze and Jialing rivers shape the city.
Afternoon – Liziba and Riverside Chongqing
Next, see the famous rail transit line passing through the building at Liziba.

See the famous rail transit line passing through the building at Liziba
Then continue toward the riverside districts.
Evening – Hongyadong
Visit Hongyadong after the lights come on.

Visit Hongyadong after the lights come on
From across the river or nearby bridges, the stacked buildings make Chongqing look almost vertical.
Have Chongqing hotpot tonight if you enjoy spicy food.
Overnight: Chongqing
Day 6 – Chongqing & Board the Yangtze River Cruise
Morning – Free Time
Keep the morning relatively relaxed.
You are about to spend three nights aboard the ship, so today is a good time for laundry, coffee, shopping or another short Chongqing walk.
Afternoon – Prepare for Embarkation
Return to your hotel, collect your luggage and transfer to the cruise boarding point.
Do not assume every ship uses exactly the same pier. Water levels and cruise operations can affect embarkation arrangements.
Evening – Board the Yangtze Cruise
Board your ship and settle into your cabin.

Evening – Board the Yangtze Cruise
The classic downstream Chongqing–Yichang itinerary normally runs for four days and three nights, making it shorter than the upstream Yichang–Chongqing version.
Watch Chongqing’s illuminated riverfront disappear behind you as the ship begins its journey downstream.
Overnight: Yangtze River cruise
Day 7 – Yangtze River: Towns, Temples & River Life
Wake on the river.
This is when the rhythm of the trip changes. You no longer need to think about railway stations, luggage transfers or hotel check-ins.
Most cruises include a shore excursion today. Depending on the ship, this may be Fengdu, Shibaozhai, or another cultural site. Cruise programs differ by company and sailing date, so check the exact itinerary before booking.

Fengdu Ghost Town
Spend the remaining hours on deck or on your cabin balcony.
Do not feel that you must attend every onboard activity. Sometimes the best part of a Yangtze cruise is simply watching villages and mountains pass slowly outside.
Overnight: Yangtze River cruise
Day 8 – The Three Gorges
This is the scenic heart of the entire journey.
Morning – Qutang Gorge
The landscape becomes more dramatic as the ship enters Qutang Gorge.

The ship enters Qutang Gorge
It is the shortest of the Three Gorges, but its cliffs rise sharply above the river.
Go outside before the ship enters the gorge.
You do not want to discover afterward that you were eating breakfast while the best scenery passed your window.
Midday – Wu Gorge
Next comes Wu Gorge, longer and more atmospheric.

Next comes Wu Gorge, longer and more atmospheric
Mountains rise in layers above the river. Mist often hangs around the peaks, especially in humid weather.
Afternoon – Smaller River Excursion
Many itineraries include a smaller-boat excursion into places such as Shennong Stream, Goddess Stream or the Lesser Three Gorges, depending on the cruise program.

Afternoon – Smaller River Excursion
These side trips matter.
The large cruise ship shows you the scale of the Yangtze. Smaller boats bring you closer to the cliffs, tributaries and villages.
Overnight: Yangtze River cruise
Day 9 – Three Gorges Dam & Yichang
Morning – Xiling Gorge and Disembarkation
The cruise reaches the Yichang area.
After leaving the ship, join the scheduled visit to the Three Gorges Dam if it is included in your cruise package.

Join the scheduled visit to the Three Gorges Dam
The dam changes the character of the journey completely. After several days of mountains and historic settlements, you suddenly encounter one of China’s largest modern engineering projects.
Classic downstream itineraries generally finish around Yichang after the dam visit.
Afternoon – Yichang
Transfer into Yichang and check into your hotel.
Keep the afternoon light.
After three nights on the river, I prefer a normal hotel night before the long transfer south.
Overnight: Yichang
Day 10 – Yichang to Guangzhou
Today is mainly a transport day.
Travel south from Yichang to Guangzhou by the most practical rail or air connection available for your date.
Do not build the itinerary around a specific train number months in advance. Chinese railway schedules can change, and some connections work better on certain dates.
After arriving in Guangzhou, stay near a metro station in the central city.
Overnight: Guangzhou
Day 11 – Guangzhou & Pearl River Night Cruise
Morning – Old Guangzhou
Spend the morning exploring Guangzhou at street level.
Consider Shamian Island, the historic neighborhoods around Liwan, or the arcaded streets of old Guangzhou.

Shamian Island, the historic neighborhoods around Liwan
This gives the final cruise some context.
You have already seen rural Guangxi and the mountainous Yangtze. Guangzhou now introduces maritime southern China and the Pearl River Delta.
Afternoon – Modern Guangzhou
Move toward the modern city around Zhujiang New Town.

Move toward the modern city around Zhujiang New Town
The skyline here feels completely different from everything earlier in the journey.
Evening – Pearl River Cruise
After dark, board a Pearl River night cruise.
This is not a wilderness journey like the Yangtze. Nor is it a landscape cruise like Guilin.

Evening – Pearl River Cruise
It is an urban river experience.
Bridges, towers and high-rise buildings illuminate the water. Canton Tower becomes the visual landmark as the boat moves through central Guangzhou.
The cruise makes a fitting final chapter because it shows how Chinese cities still grow around their rivers.
Overnight: Guangzhou
Day 12 – Guangzhou Departure
Enjoy breakfast and leave according to your flight or train schedule.
If you are flying internationally from Guangzhou, this itinerary ends naturally here.
However, Guangzhou also connects easily with Hong Kong. Travelers continuing there can take the high-speed train south rather than flying.
Tickets, Transport & What to Bring
Li River Cruise
Book the Li River cruise before arriving in Guilin, particularly during busy travel periods.
Remember that the cruise is one-way from Guilin toward Yangshuo. Therefore, arrange luggage transport and your Yangshuo hotel accordingly.
I would not return to Guilin on the same afternoon. Staying in Yangshuo makes the journey feel much more natural.
Yangtze Cruise
The Chongqing → Yichang downstream route is my preferred direction for this itinerary.
It normally takes four days and three nights, compared with five days and four nights upstream.
However, cruise ships differ considerably.
Compare cabin size, balcony type, included shore excursions, optional excursions, meal arrangements and English-language services before booking. Do not choose purely by the photographs of the ship.
Pearl River Cruise
Treat the Pearl River cruise as an evening sightseeing experience rather than a major transport journey.
Book a departure after sunset if city lights are your priority. However, allow enough time to reach the correct pier because Guangzhou traffic can slow considerably during the evening.
What to Bring
Bring comfortable walking shoes, light layers, rain protection and sun protection. A small day bag is useful during Yangtze shore excursions.
Also bring a light jacket even in warmer months. River decks can become windy after sunset.
For photographers, a wide-angle lens works particularly well in Guilin. Meanwhile, a moderate telephoto lens is useful for isolating villages, cliffs and distant peaks along the Yangtze.
Ruqin’s Trip Design Note
I would resist adding another river simply to make this itinerary look more complete.
Three river experiences are enough.
The Li River shows China’s classical landscape. The Yangtze gives you the real feeling of traveling through the country by water. Finally, the Pearl River shows how a great Chinese river becomes part of a modern megacity.
More importantly, the journey has a clear progression:
mountains and villages → great gorges → modern waterfront city.
That gives the trip variety without losing its central theme.
The Yangtze cruise also provides something many China itineraries lack: several days when you unpack once and slow down. For a longer China trip, that pause can be as valuable as another famous attraction.
Plan More of Your China Trip
This 12-Day China River Cruise Tour works well as a complete journey, but it can also form one section of a longer China itinerary. Before Guilin, you can add Hong Kong or Guangzhou; after Guangzhou, you can continue to Hong Kong, Shanghai or Beijing.
If this is your first trip to China, allow extra days before or after the river journey for the country’s major historical cities. The rivers show you another side of China — one that is slower, greener and often easier to appreciate from the deck of a boat.
