Trip Introduction
A Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is one of the classic travel experiences in China—and still one of the most memorable.
If it’s your first visit to Guilin, this is usually the route I recommend most. It combines the best of the region in a single day: the famous limestone peaks of the Li River, the river journey itself, and the slower countryside atmosphere around Yangshuo.
The scenery along the river is what many travelers imagine when they picture Guilin—misty karst mountains rising sharply from the water, bamboo groves along the shoreline, fishing boats drifting past, and village life unfolding quietly between the peaks.
The journey ends in Yangshuo, where the pace feels very different from Guilin. After the river cruise, there’s time to explore the countryside, walk through local villages, and spend time along the lively lanes of West Street before returning to Guilin.
What works especially well about this route is its natural rhythm. The morning is scenic and relaxed on the river, while the afternoon feels more active and flexible once you reach Yangshuo.
Day Itinerary
Morning – Guilin to Zhujiang Pier
Suggested departure: around 8:00–8:30 am
Start the day from Guilin and travel to the cruise departure point at Zhujiang Pier.
The drive usually takes around one hour.
An earlier departure is worth it, as it makes boarding more relaxed and gives you plenty of time before the cruise begins.
Mid-Morning to Early Afternoon – Li River Cruise
Cruise duration: around 4 hours
Board your cruise and begin the journey along Li River.
This section between Guilin and Yangshuo is the most famous stretch of the river and is widely considered the highlight of the region.
For many travelers, this becomes one of the most memorable landscapes of their China trip.
Along the way you’ll pass:
- dramatic limestone karst peaks
- riverside villages
- bamboo groves
- fishermen on the water
- farmland tucked between the mountains
The scenery changes constantly, which is part of what makes the cruise so enjoyable.
I usually recommend spending as much time as possible on the outer deck rather than inside the cabin—the views are the main reason to come.
Lunch is typically served onboard around midday.
Afternoon – Arrive in Yangshuo
The cruise usually arrives in Yangshuo in the early afternoon.
After several quiet hours on the river, Yangshuo feels lively and energetic.
Late Afternoon – Yangshuo Countryside
After arriving, spend some time exploring the countryside around Yangshuo.
This part of the day is more flexible depending on your pace and interests.
Popular options include:
- country lanes through rice fields
- riverside village roads
- small local farming communities
- easy cycling between karst peaks
- visiting a village home or local courtyard
What makes Yangshuo special isn’t only the town itself—it’s the surrounding rural landscape.
Even a short time outside the centre gives a very different perspective from the river cruise.
West Street
Later, spend time walking along West Street.
West Street is Yangshuo’s best-known historic pedestrian lane, lined with cafés, restaurants, small shops, and guesthouses beneath the limestone peaks.
Some travelers enjoy staying longer here for coffee or an early dinner before returning to Guilin.
Evening – Return to Guilin
Drive time: around 1.5 hours
In the late afternoon or early evening, return to Guilin by road.
The drive usually takes around 1.5 hours, arriving back in the evening.
Planning Tips for This Route
Best Time of Year
This route works year-round, but spring and autumn are often especially pleasant for weather and river scenery.
Mist after light rain can make the karst landscape particularly atmospheric.
Best Seats on the Cruise
If possible, spend time on the open deck.
The outdoor views are the highlight of the journey and often much better for photography than sitting inside.
What to Bring
I usually recommend:
- comfortable walking shoes
- sun protection in warmer months
- light rain jacket if visiting during rainy season
- camera or phone with plenty of storage—the scenery is extremely photogenic
