Trip Introduction
A day trip to the Longji Rice Terraces is one of the most rewarding escapes from Guilin.
While Guilin is known for its limestone peaks and river scenery, Longji Rice Terraces offers something completely different—mountain landscapes shaped by centuries of farming, hillside villages, and a slower pace of life among Guangxi’s minority communities.
Often called the Dragon’s Backbone Rice Terraces, Longji is famous for its sweeping terraced fields carved across the mountainsides. But beyond the scenery itself, the visit is also about village life, walking paths, wooden stilt houses, and understanding how people have lived and farmed here for generations.
I usually recommend this trip for travelers who want to spend a day beyond Guilin city and see a different side of Guangxi—less urban, more rural, and deeply connected to the landscape.
This route combines the best viewpoints in Ping’an with time in a minority village, creating a full but very manageable day from Guilin.
Day Itinerary
Morning – Guilin to Longji Rice Terraces
Suggested departure: around 8:30–9:00 am
Leave Guilin in the morning and head north toward Longji Rice Terraces.
The drive usually takes around 2 hours, gradually climbing from Guilin’s river landscape into the mountains of Longsheng.
After arriving at the Longji scenic area parking lot, this is where visitors purchase entry tickets for the Longji Rice Terraces before continuing onward to the village area. From here, you’ll transfer deeper into the scenic zone toward Ping’an.
As you continue into the mountains, the scenery shifts noticeably—from Guilin’s karst peaks to terraced hillsides, forested valleys, and traditional wooden villages.
From the Ping’an entrance area, the rest of the visit continues on foot along village paths and stone stairways through the terraces.
Late Morning – Ping’an Village & Rice Terrace Walk
Arrive in Ping’an Village, one of the best-known villages in the Longji area.
Ping’an is often the easiest and most rewarding section of Longji for a day visit, with accessible viewpoints and excellent terrace scenery.
From the village entrance, walk uphill through narrow stone paths lined with traditional wooden houses.
Along the way, you’ll pass:
- Zhuang wooden stilt homes
- hillside lanes
- small guesthouses
- terraced rice fields unfolding above the village
Viewpoint 2 – Seven Stars with the Moon
Continue to the famous Seven Stars with the Moon viewpoint.
This is one of Longji’s most recognisable views, where clusters of small terraced circles create the pattern that gives the viewpoint its name.
It’s one of the classic photo stops in the Ping’an terraces.
Walk Between the Viewpoints
From there, continue along the terrace path toward the second main viewpoint.
This section is especially enjoyable.
The trail passes through:
- bamboo groves
- hillside paths
- terraced slopes
- open mountain views over the valley
The walking here is moderate, with some stairs, but manageable for most visitors with comfortable shoes.
Viewpoint 1 – Panoramic Rice Terrace View
Reach the panoramic upper viewpoint overlooking the terraces.
This wider perspective is often where the scale of Longji becomes most striking.
Depending on the season, the terraces look completely different:
- mirror-like with water in spring
- bright green in summer
- golden in autumn
- layered and quiet in winter
Every season has a different character.
Lunch in Ping’an Village
After walking, stop for lunch in the village.
A simple local meal in Ping’an works well before continuing.
Many restaurants overlook the terraces, which makes lunch here especially enjoyable.
Afternoon – Minority Village Visit
Later in the day, continue to Huangluo Yao Village if time allows.
This village is known for Yao minority culture and daily mountain village life.
It offers a different perspective from Ping’an—less focused on the terraces themselves and more on community life, wooden architecture, and local traditions.
I usually think of this as a quieter cultural stop after the scenic walking in the rice terraces.
Late Afternoon – Return to Guilin
Drive time: around 2 hours
Begin the drive back to Guilin in the late afternoon.
Most travelers return to the city around 5:30–6:00 pm, depending on traffic and season.
After a full day in the mountains, the drive back is usually a good chance to rest.
Planning Tips for Visiting Longji
Best Time to Visit
Each season looks very different in Longji:
- Spring (April–May): water-filled terraces reflecting the sky
- Summer (June–August): lush green rice fields
- Autumn (September–October): golden harvest season
- Winter (November–February): quieter mountain scenery, sometimes mist or frost
Autumn is especially popular for photography, but every season offers something different.
Walking Conditions
Expect:
- stone village paths
- uphill sections
- stairs between viewpoints
Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended.
