Tour Introduction
If you’d like to explore one of China’s most remarkable Buddhist heritage sites beyond Chongqing, a day trip to Dazu Rock Carvings is well worth the journey.
This private tour takes you from Chongqing to Dazu County, home to the UNESCO-listed rock carvings that have been preserved in the surrounding hills for centuries. Carved between the late Tang and Song dynasties, these cliffside sculptures are known for both their artistic detail and their storytelling.
The carvings bring together Buddhist imagery, local beliefs, and scenes from everyday life, making them feel surprisingly expressive and human even today.
With private transport arranged from Chongqing, the journey feels straightforward and comfortable. You can choose a self-guided visit or a fully guided experience with an English-speaking guide, entrance tickets, and lunch included.
Because this is a private day trip, there’s no rushing to keep up with a group and no waiting around—just a relaxed visit at your own pace.

Your Day Trip to Dazu
Morning Departure from Chongqing
Your day begins with pickup from your Chongqing hotel, usually around 8:30 AM.
From the city, it takes around 2 hours by private vehicle to reach Dazu County, passing through the countryside west of Chongqing.
The drive is comfortable and gives you time to relax before arriving at the historic site.
Dazu Rock Carvings
Once in Dazu, you’ll visit the famous Dazu Rock Carvings, one of China’s most important collections of religious stone sculpture.
Created between the 7th and 12th centuries, the carvings are spread across several mountain sites including Beishan and Baodingshan, with Baodingshan being the most visited and visually impressive.

Unlike many grotto sites, the carvings here feel narrative and full of movement—depicting Buddhist teachings, spiritual figures, daily life scenes, and detailed expressions carved directly into the rock face.
The site offers both artistic beauty and historical depth, even for visitors without a background in Buddhist art.
Suggested visit: around 2 hours
Baodingshan Carvings
The main focus of the day is Baodingshan, the best-preserved section of the Dazu carvings.
Set on the hillside about 527 metres above sea level, this area includes the famous Dafowan and Xiaofowan cliff carvings.
Thousands of statues are carved along the U-shaped cliffside, creating what feels almost like a continuous stone mural unfolding across the mountain.
There are said to be nearly 10,000 carved figures here, with remarkably detailed scenes and very little repetition.
Walking along the carved cliff paths gives you time to stop, look closely, and appreciate the craftsmanship from different angles.
I usually recommend moving slowly here—many of the most interesting details reveal themselves only when you pause.
Suggested visit: around 1–2 hours
Local Lunch
After the visit, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Chongqing.
This is a good chance to rest after walking the site and enjoy regional Chongqing flavours in a relaxed setting.
Return to Chongqing
After lunch and a short break, begin the drive back to Chongqing.
The return journey takes around 2 hours, with drop-off at your hotel in the late afternoon or early evening.
This tour works especially well if you’re interested in Buddhist art, history, or UNESCO heritage sites and would like an easy cultural day trip from Chongqing without arranging transport independently.
