Fenghuang Ancient Town

3-Day Zhangjiajie & Fenghuang Tour: Avatar Mountains, Tianmen Mountain & Ancient Town

Tour Introduction

This 3-day Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang itinerary is designed for travelers who want to experience the highlights of western Hunan in a short amount of time.

It combines two very different sides of the region: the dramatic mountain landscapes of Zhangjiajie and the slower riverside atmosphere of Fenghuang Ancient Town. Together, they create one of the most memorable journeys in Hunan—mixing natural scenery, traditional architecture, and local ethnic culture in one route.

You’ll spend time among the famous sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, visit the landscapes that inspired the floating mountains in Avatar, walk beside the peaceful waters of Golden Whip Stream, explore the historic lanes of Fenghuang Ancient Town, and finish at the dramatic summit views of Tianmen Mountain.

I usually recommend this route for travelers with limited time who want more than just Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Fenghuang adds a completely different rhythm to the journey. After the cliffs and mountain views of Zhangjiajie, an evening in Fenghuang feels slower, quieter, and more atmospheric.

Because the route covers both Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang, arrival one day before the tour begins—or early in the morning on Day 1—works best. Airport or railway station pick-up and departure transfer are included, which makes the overall trip much easier to organise.

Your 3-Day Zhangjiajie & Fenghuang Itinerary

Day 1 – Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: Yuanjiajie & Tianzi Mountain

Overnight in Wulingyuan

Your journey begins in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the most iconic scenic area in Zhangjiajie and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.

Known for its towering sandstone pillars rising through mist and forest, this landscape is what many travelers associate with Zhangjiajie. The scenery here changes constantly with weather and light—sometimes clear and expansive, sometimes wrapped in cloud.

You’ll ride the famous Bailong Elevator, a dramatic glass elevator built into the cliffside, taking you directly up to the mountaintop viewpoints.

From there, continue to Yuanjiajie, home to the mountain scenery that inspired the floating peaks in Avatar, including the famous Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint.

Later, visit Tianzi Mountain, known for its wide panoramic views across the stone peak forest. This area often feels more open than Yuanjiajie, with excellent viewpoints overlooking layers of mountains stretching into the distance.

Day 2 – Golden Whip Stream & Fenghuang Ancient Town

Overnight in Fenghuang

This morning begins with a walk along Golden Whip Stream.

Set at the bottom of the canyon, Golden Whip Stream offers a completely different perspective from the mountaintop viewpoints of Day 1. The trail is relatively easy, following a clear stream beneath towering cliffs and sandstone formations. It’s one of the most peaceful walks in Zhangjiajie, with fresh air, forest scenery, and occasional monkeys along the way.

After visiting the park, travel onward to Fenghuang Ancient Town.

The crowd in Fenghuang

Fenghuang is one of China’s best-known ancient towns, famous for its riverside stilt houses, stone bridges, lantern-lit evening scenery, and strong Miao ethnic heritage.

I usually recommend staying overnight here because Fenghuang is at its most atmospheric after dark, when the riverside buildings light up and reflect across the water.

Day 3 – Tianmen Mountain

Return to Zhangjiajie

After returning to Zhangjiajie, visit Tianmen Mountain.

Tianmen Mountain feels completely different from Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Instead of sandstone pillar valleys, the scenery here is more dramatic and vertical, with sheer cliffs, mountain roads, high ridges, and sweeping views over the surrounding countryside.

Highlights typically include the famous Tianmen Cave—often called Heaven’s Gate—the cliffside skywalk, and the scenic mountain cableway.

If timing allows, an optional stop can also be made at Junsheng Sandstone Art Gallery before your departure transfer.

Your tour ends with drop-off at the airport, railway station, or your hotel in Zhangjiajie.

Why This Route Works

What makes this 3-day route special is the contrast between the places.

Zhangjiajie gives you towering mountains, deep valleys, and dramatic natural scenery. Fenghuang adds history, slower evenings, and a completely different cultural atmosphere.

For first-time visitors wanting to experience both the landscapes and the cultural side of western Hunan without extending the trip too long, this itinerary creates a very balanced journey.
