If you’d like to go beyond Harbin city and experience northeast China’s classic winter landscapes, this 2-day Yabuli and China Snow Town itinerary is one of the most rewarding short trips you can make.

Combining skiing at Yabuli Ski Resort with an overnight stay in China Snow Town, the route offers two very different sides of winter travel in Heilongjiang.

Yabuli brings mountain scenery, ski slopes, and outdoor winter activities. Snow Town feels quieter and more atmospheric, known for its thick snow-covered rooftops, forest setting, and glowing evening views.

I usually recommend this route for travelers visiting Harbin in winter who want to experience more than the city’s ice festival. It’s a great choice if you’re interested in snowy landscapes, winter photography, skiing, or simply seeing another side of northeast China.

Because both Yabuli and Snow Town are southeast of Harbin, they work well together as a short overnight trip.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Harbin to Yabuli Ski Resort to China Snow Town

Skiing & Winter Mountain Scenery

Morning – Depart Harbin for Yabuli

Suggested departure: around 8:00 am

Leave Harbin in the morning and travel toward Yabuli Ski Resort.

The drive usually takes around 3–4 hours, depending on winter road conditions.

Yabuli is China’s best-known ski resort area and a popular winter destination for both skiing and snow activities. Located in the mountains, it offers a noticeably different landscape from Harbin city.

Midday – Ski Time at Yabuli

Spend several hours at the ski resort.

Yabuli has slopes for a wide range of abilities, from beginners trying skiing for the first time to more experienced skiers.

If skiing isn’t your main focus, many travelers still enjoy visiting for the snowy mountain scenery and winter atmosphere.

I usually suggest allowing at least 3 hours here, though longer is possible if skiing is your priority.

Afternoon – Transfer to China Snow Town

Suggested departure: mid-afternoon

Later in the afternoon, continue onward to China Snow Town.

The drive from Yabuli to Snow Town takes around 2 hours.

Snow Town has become one of China’s most photographed winter destinations, especially known for its thick snow accumulation that forms soft rounded shapes over rooftops and wooden houses throughout the village.

Evening – Explore Snow Town at Night

After arrival and check-in, spend the evening walking through Snow Town.

This is one of the best times to be there.

As lights come on across the village, the snowy rooftops and lantern-lit streets create a very distinctive winter atmosphere—quiet, scenic, and especially beautiful for photography.

An overnight stay here is what makes the trip worthwhile. Snow Town feels very different after dark compared with a daytime visit.

Day 2 – Snow Town Morning & Return to Harbin

Snow Scenery & Winter Village Experience

Morning – Free Time in Snow Town

The morning is best spent enjoying Snow Town at a slower pace.

I usually recommend waking early if weather allows. Morning light in Snow Town can be especially beautiful, particularly after overnight snowfall.

This is a good time for:

• photography
• walking through the village
• viewing the snowy rooftops and forest scenery
• optional snow activities depending on the season

Snow Town is also a good place simply to slow down and enjoy the winter landscape without rushing between attractions.

Midday – Departure for Harbin

After lunch, begin the return journey to Harbin.

The drive back usually takes 3–4 hours, depending on road and weather conditions.

Arrival is typically in the late afternoon or early evening.

Planning Tips for This 2-Day Route

Best Time to Visit

This trip works best from December through February, when snow conditions are most reliable.

January usually brings the deepest snow and strongest winter scenery.

Where to Stay

Snow Town offers a range of guesthouses and simple winter lodges.

Accommodation can book quickly during peak winter season, especially around:

• New Year
• Chinese New Year
• weekends in January

Booking early is usually a good idea.

What to Wear

Winter temperatures in Yabuli and Snow Town are often colder than in Harbin.

Recommended:

• down jacket
• thermal base layers
• insulated winter boots
• gloves
• hat
• scarf or face covering
• hand warmers

Good footwear matters especially in Snow Town, where roads can be snowy or icy.

Why This Route Works

What I like most about this trip is the contrast between the two destinations.

Yabuli offers active winter travel—skiing, mountain scenery, and snow sports. Snow Town slows the pace down with village views, snowy forests, and a much quieter atmosphere.

Together they make a very balanced winter side trip from Harbin.

For travelers visiting northeast China in winter, it’s one of the best short escapes beyond the city.
